Question 2 months out & a new dietician...

I came home a little bummed. Everything was going great at my 2 month post op appointment... My psychologist was pleased and my bariatrican says I'm right on target. When I go in with the dietician she says she is "very worried about (me)"! I've been concentrating on my protein which is at 80-90 a day. That's all good until she asks how many calories? I'm averaging 600 a day... She was dumb struck!!! Said I need to be at 1200... Can this be right??

She told me to eat every 2 hours and always take a sandwich. She wants my carbs to be at 100g a day. This means adding WW breads and crackers, also soft fruits, sf puddings, protein bars...

I think about eating all these extras and now I'm freaking out a little. Ive been happy with my progress; I'm losing weight and my energy level is fine. Yikes!!

As always, thanks for your comments.

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Gosh I don't know what to say, that seems like a little much to me this early out. My nutritionist only allows 3 meals a day and no snacks (I don't follow that no snack rule though) and 18 months out my calories are still under 1000 calories most of the time, I normally average about 900 a day. I would be very careful with bread, it can swell in your pouch, when I eat bread I have to toast it & I was a year out before I was allowed bread. Fruits early out made me feel sick, so just be careful whatever you do. Good luck to you.

Maybe she is thinking of the 100 or so carbs your brain needs to function well. It does seem kind of early, though.

Well I didn't sleep good at all last night. I hate the fact the I am questioning my new dietician. I can't help it... I need to call tmrw to talk with the psych and double check with any written notes from yesterday's appointment.

Everything I have read confirms my thoughts, I just need to be sure (she's brand new to program). It really does sound like a lot of carbs!! Double carbs and double the calories that I have been taking in. Oh yah, Carol Jo, she did mention 100g for brain function.

Doc gave me some advice......go with what your proffesional staff say....a phone call is neccesary, if it's going to calm some nervousness.....I think they suggeted more calories because A) your bodily function needs to even itself out (brain is a big one for me) and B) they don't want your metabolism to slow down....you can only do just proteins for so long before your metabolism just runs on that...then you eat a carb...and oh my god the scale jumps up....that's why the adtkins diet doesn't work long term and this does, if you work with it.....every nutritionist is different...but the process is all the same....

Wow that does sound like a lot. I am a month out and my nutritionist only allows 3 meals a day and no snacks. I do not think I could eat more anyway. Good luck and I sure that the phone call will clear everything up.

On the average.
At your stage, mose people can manage 800-900kcals at most. Your pouch is still adjusting. 1200 kcals is what to shoot for past your first year.
As one of the goals, you will need 100g carbs to prevent brain fog, but that's still in the future. At 2 months out, all you can probable manage is meet the 64oz fluid goal and the 60g protein goal. That's fine for now. Don't stress out. Just keep in mind that what your dietician said is the *final* goal, and you can take your time accomplishing it. Besides, you'll need to re-indtroduce foods to your pouch, that comes first, your pouch may not agree with your dietician's plan

Alright... Just got off the phone with the psych then the dietician. I do feel better.

I'm to not think about calories and carbs (even though I'm suppose to track them) she wants me to concentrate on getting in 6 small meals (2-3oz) a day, plus 64oz of liquid. Incorporating protein in all and some veggies, fruits, nuts, rice crackers, and quinoa too.

She said I have to trust her on this. Which I do. I was however thrown off cause she is new and was stumbling quite a bit at our first meeting. She knew this and apologized saying she was having an off day. (I've definitely had my share of those!) so thank you guys for listening to my first freakout
