Default Maintaining Weight Loss

Well, I'm only half a pound from my goal weight - I'm thrilled about that, but worried, too. I've lost before - I know how to lose. I've never, ever, not once managed to maintain a weight loss.

I know I now have the tool that is going to make the difference for me (Help me, Oh My Little Pouchy - you're my only hope!) this time. I know I'll be following these rules for my whole life. I know I've found physical activities that I truly love doing. All of that is true.

But I still get mighty worried as I approach that goal number on the scale!

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Worry is normal. You are approaching new territory! Your prior experience probably has lots of cases of weight loss (even if they're not on this scale!), but maintaining the loss ... now that's a whole 'nother thing altogether!!

So far you've come through a dramatic phase where the scale and your friends were giving you lots of positive reinforcement. The excitement of seeing the numbers and sizes fall, combined with all the compliments you've probably received, have made this a year-long adrenalin rush!

Maintenance is different. It's way harder than what you've done so far! Now you have to live those habits of good nutrition you've spent the last year developing. Not because folks'll tell you nice things if you do. Not even because they'll crow and tell you "we told you so" if you regain. Because you have found a place where you have a life and are happy!! Why leave it? (Think of the cost of buying an upsized wardrobe!! )

Now is when you live the rules and no one notices. The adventures of your last year are yesterday's news. Now is when you start living the way "normal" people must if they are to maintain at their weights. You have destroyed the "feast-diet" cycle of gain and loss. Now you have to be good just because you have to be good!

It's hard, but easier than losing all you've gained! It's rewarding to tie your shoes and think back 5 years to the first time you could again post-op. Life is full of small but satisfying moments to remind you where you came from and why.

This is where "Incipit vita nova" gains real meaning!!

You can do it. I've watched your journey. You're one tough little lady!! This is just the next step in the new life!!

There are many many many people ahead of me. But I am a few months ahead of you...and I am still here. Still maintaining...still in the game.

The difference is that you have a tool that you have FOUGHT for! And look at you....you did it! You have made choices to get here. Choices....and that has made all the difference.

Thanks, guys! These irrational fears are really fascinating things, aren't they? You KNOW all these things, and yet... I guess that's why they're called irrational, huh? LOL

Perfessor, I'm so glad you pointed out that this is, indeed, another new life. I hadn't thought of it that way, but yes, of course it is. Maybe THIS is the new life - the weight loss phase being the bridge between the old one and this one.

I was reflecting on my weight loss this morning. These last 30 pounds have come off VERY slowly, with long, LONG stalls followed by my body finally giving up 5-7 pounds, then another long stall. While that was certainly frustrating at times, in hindsight I'm really grateful for that. I've gotten into the habit already that there isn't going to be a whole lot of losing going on. I do feel like I'm kind of primed now to maintain.

Doesn't mean I'm not still anxious, of course! But, I *am* up for this challenge. I always knew I was tough, but I've learned I'm even stronger than I thought!

Love you guys! So grateful for all of you!
Laura

Congratulations on fighting the good fight and winning. My reason for the surgery was to stop the yo-yo. Now we have the tool to do just that!
