Default switching from lap to bypass insurance denied

Has anyone tried to get the insurance company to approve switching from lap band to gastric by pass? I have HBCBS and have been denied. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

gizmo I am not sure about how to go from applying for RNY from the lap band but you know you can appeal the insurance companies decision. Some of the girls on here have had to do that, does your insurance cover the lap band and RNY? I know mine only covered the RNY at the time, now they cover both but when I had it done they didnt, call them and ask. Also did they state why you were denied?

They cover both however since they already covered me for lapband they said I would have to prove the band is faulty. I wanted to have by pass but let the doctor talk me into the band. I lost 20lbs and that was all. I have never felt full from day one. Also the dr I went to did not have nutrition support or any other support. So alot of things went wrong and now I do not know how to get the insurance company to see this. I have appealled twice

Oh Ok I misunderstood the post, I thought you were denied the band and wantedt o go for the RNY....hmmmm, not sure how to go about that then? Do you need another fill? Since you havent felt full since day 1 maybe you need it to be tightened by a fill?

Welcome to the board, thank you for joining us.

Lap bands need fillings, the cost of which incidentally are not covered by some insurances, so if you haven't had any fillings, you won't be able to lose weight. Most people need multiple fillings to get it right in the first place. Also, it depends much much more on your own will power in losing, than with the early days of bypass.

That said, I think the first thing you need to do is find a surgeon first who will be willing to switch your band to bypass (since your surgeon will not do it) and talk over your probelms to find a way to have your insurance approve, rather than do it on your own. Surgeons would know better what works and what won't in that quarter.
This time find a bariatric center that has the full program--surgeons and supporting staff.

((((((HUGS)))))) May your journey go well.

How long has it been since you had the band procedure done? Did you have fills done? Have they xrayed you to see if the band is still in place? Have you seen a new surgeon and what do they say?

and will your doctor provide documentation indicating the problems and that the band is not working....this could give the "medical necessity" area a boost for the insurance company...I say KEEP FIGHTING...!

I did have all my fills they could fill any more. I have asked the dr. that I am seeing now to help but they only put the request in once if denied they can not help any more.
My surgeon will to the switch the insurance company will not cover the switch until I can prove something is wrong with the band. I have told the dr. I feel full for 2 days after a fill and then that is gone. When ever I cough I have a clicking of the port in and out, which makes me feel like something may be wrong with the port and letting the solution out.

I will tell you what I would do if this was ME.

I would request test be done to see if the band is in place, if it is still filled the way its supposed to be. This could go a long way to proving somthing isnt working correctly. Good luck this is a new one on me.
