Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Hi Christina,
I had BCBS of RI. My doctor handled all of the pre-authorization stuff. He had given me a list of criteria that I met. Some of this stuff can be pretty confusing, ask lots of questions of lots of people. Good Luck! My doc required extesive testing (cardio, psych, sleep apnea) to name a few. BC covered everything. I think insurance companies must realize that insuring someone who is in the morbidly obese category is going to cost them more in the long run, than someone who has the surgery and is healthier overall. Just my thought..... Anyway...good luck I hope it works out for you.

I have BCBS of AL, mine required 6mos of Dr. supervised weight loss. (sucks) what is so ironic about that is, 2 mo before I seriously decided to have the surgery and go to a surgeon about it, the company my husband worked for at the time had Empire BCBS of NY same as Lisa!!!!!
Most BCBS's are pretty easy you just have to meet the criteria (medically) and follow their guidelines set up in your policy. I have heard (don't know how true) even if you have the same ins as someone else, you have to check into how the policy was written and what your employer has authorized to cover when it comes to surgeries like this one. I am sure that your surgeon will fill you in on all of the specifics. I would call my ins company and see what their criteria is.

Hi Christina,

As I mentioned on other post I live in Louisiana and have BCBS. My policy does not cover any weight loss surgery. I was told by my drs office that BCBS of LA excludes the policy but I know BCBS of other areas does cover it. Not real sure what that is about. If you find out any different, please let me know.

Good Luck

Shondi
