Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Thumbs up

Hi DocSanae/Twinmzpeachez,

I've been reading so much information that I cannot recall where I read it but Medicaid does cover the surgery. Speak with a medicaid representative to verify info. Good luck and let me know how it went for you.

Hugs!!!

Yes, both Medicaid and Medicare cover the surgery, but there are different requirements in different states.
If you do a search, you should be able to come up with news articles that report on this, as the official announcement came last year, if I remember correctly.

Yes i have medicade, and it does cover the surgery. BUT i had to have a file of weight loss, for the last six months, and i had to have some other drs to say it would help me in other ways, like my knees, feet.......So i dont know where your from, so it might be different in your state........

I heard depending on your height and your present weight, you can qualify for the surgery as well as other factors: diabetes, sleep apnea, hypertention, and others due to other body aches and breathing problems, etc. Talk to an insurance coordinator to better help you. Good luck.

Wishing you good health!!!

The basic criteira for weight loss surgery is set by the NIH, and insurance companies and bariatric surgeons and centers follow this criteria, plus adding some conditions of their own.
Follow this link for the NIH criteria.
BMI (Body Mass Index) is the height/weight ratio that Andrea is referring to.

MAine FYI:

For those near EMMC Dr. Toder/Dr. Clough, MaineCare does not cover the lap surgery that Dr. Toder performs. MaineCare patients go through Dr. Clough which is open surgery.

As I also work in a Family Practice setting I know that MaineCare requires documentation and criteria must be met for approval.
