Exclamation Possible changes in Life Insurance Policies after Bypass

Hello, to all of you. I hope and pray that all of you are in the best of health. However, yesterday a insurance salemen from my mortgage lender came to my house yesterday so that my husband and I could take out a poicy to cover the house and ourselves just in case of an illness, death, etc... However, there were strict guildlines such as weight requirements in order to take out more insurance on our home( which included a nurse coming out to her home to check her weight and etc.)Therefore, I shared with the rep that i had had the gastric bypass and I will soon meet the requirement to take out a larger policy. The rep suggested that I take out the policy that doesn't require the nurse to come out to the home and before my medical record display that I had the bypass surgery. The rep explained that each person has a medical history that is shared just like your credit. Also, he explained that due to the complications and risk that are undetermined after surgery he explained that insurances may deny people that had the weight loss surgery. Was this a marketing technique or is he correct?

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

I have heard that all insurance carriers have designated gastric bypass patients as high risk from someone who runs an agency for the type of insurance you are talking about.

Why has it been deemed high risk? Because the really long term results (15-20ish years, I mean) aren't known?

I am not sure how the housing insurance works but on anther board I post on she cant get medical insurance privately because she has had the surgery and they wont insure GBS people. She said if she worked for a large company they would have to accept her, but her going to try and get a private policy no one will touch her because of the surgery..HTH

It may depend on whether you already have a policy, or you are taking out a new policy.
Earthygirl (I think it was) got a reduction on the policy she already had, I think.

wow, i didn't know all this.... kinda wish i would have. This is obviously something nobody mentions while preparing for the surgery. i sure do hate to think, that i wouldn't be able to get medical coverage if i ever had to get it on my own and not through my company. And it sure doesn't make sense. I mean high risk surgery comes in many forms. I didn't know that because you have to have a "high risk" surgery to save your life, you may not be able to be covered by insurance in the future.... wow what a dilema, very interesting to say the least.

This kind of information would not have changed my mind in the least. I feel so much better now that I thank God every day for these new opportunities. It won't be long before some of these restrictions ease up. In the meantime, ANYTIME you have a 'high risk' surgery or something is done that changes your body structure (removal of kidney for instance) you will go into the 'high' risk category. This is not to say that you can't get insurance. I worked for BCBS for two years and can assure you there are always policies that by law have to take the high risk. The problem is this: they are darn expensive! If you keep your health good, even if you did have your surgery, you will always be able to find some sort of coverage. On a personal note, be very careful of supplementary policies. Often times they sound like such a good deal but in fact are long term fleecing. Take the same amount that you would pay for the supplementary policy and start putting it monthly into a money market account. You will have better end results most of the time.

Just my two cents,

R-Bren

thanks for the info. And of course i would still have had the surgery. My health depended on it. It is just sad that when you do something to basically save your life, or give you longer life, you have to pay for it, literally.
But again, thank you for the information. it is much appreciated.
