It's called "zoni", roughly meaning hmm.. pot luck. Well, not really
Means, mixed soup. There are quite a few variations depending on the regions, but the common factor ingredients are some veggies (regional difference), mochi (steamed rice pound into cakes--either round or rectangular), and the soup is either clear or miso, sometimes chicken, sometimes not.
Clear soup, chicken, retangular mochi and red (orange), white and green veggies. This from my family recipe.

Miso soup, round mochi, and only white and green, no red. This is hubby's family recipe.
Off I go now to the local shrine for midnight New Year festivities

(Pics are from last year.)
Lining up to pay honors.

The shrine building.

Big drum.

Bonfire.
