After weight loss surgery, people drop pounds. But some patients lose something else - their hair! It's usually mild and temporary, but sometimes it can be severe.

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Well im going to chime in hear.
I think my hair loss stage lasted
longer then most people. FOR me it did begin
between month 3 and 4 and still is going on
just not as much daily now. I have had very
intensive blood work done by a nerologist and
I am not deficient in any nutrients.

I did use biotin well before the surgery. I think it
helped my new growth but didnt really prevent the
hair loss.

At the suggestion of my hairsytlist, I did use the NIOXIN
products for hair which gave my hair a thicker look but didnt
do much for the thinning.

THE new growth now at 14 months out for me is filling out the
spots that had really got alarmingly thin. THIS phase was more
difficult then i imagined it would be. THE areas for me that thinned the most was the top and bangs which i put thru more styling then the back of my hair.

I would also add that this may not be associated directly with the
surgery. PEOPLE who do atkins 100 percent to the book also experience
the same hair thinning effect when they are in ketosis and looseing
rapidly so i believe its just part of the body changes with a rapid
weight loss.

JUST remember when this phase hits, you cont go completely bald as some do from medical treatments but you will have thinning. THAT for me
I was truely the only one who noticed it.

ANYONE ELSE???
this is my experience and thoughts that this is a factor for anyone with rapid weight loss???

Red face Ugh....

I'm not looking forward to this stage.

I've not started loosing at a huge amount yet...and I'm just over 4mos. post op.....but, after reading this article....I see that it varies with each individual.

As in the article it was 8-9mos.
UGH!!!
I'm soooo obsessed with my hair....as a lot of us are! LOL.

I need to do better with my vitamins....I am ashamed to admit I'm not that good at the routine of taking them....I've never been great at taking things on a regular basis.....

Thanks for your post Lisa....You are such an encouragement to us all!!

BTW....where are these articles coming from....is it a new feature on the sight?? Just curious....

I spoke with my hairdresser today and she told me that Nioxin is probably one of the best things we can do, it was initally produced for chemo patients. Get the one that is for noticibly thinning hair. (the strongest one) I know ppl who had the surgery, didn't take the vitamins and didn't use the Nioxin, and now wears a wig all the time. I know this could probably be other things, but I'm not willing to chance it! It is a bit pricey but it might be worth a shot along with the Biotin!? I bought some today and my hair does look and feel thicker. but, again I'm not losing hair yet.
I just hope this will work once my hair begin to fall out.

I have had noticeable amounts of hair come out so far, but so far my hair is still pretty thick and full so I haven't really freaked out yet, but it is good to hear about that Nioxin product. I will have to check into it.

I'm also starting to notice the hair loss. Everytime I wash my hair, I get a handful of hair-- I've been taking the Biotin for at least 2 months, maybe I'm not taking enough. How much is the recommended dose for us? I think I'm the only one noticing my hair loss because I do wear alot of hair pieces (pony tails, half wigs, braids, etc.). If the hair loss gets extreme (noticable), I guess I'll just get a cute cut to go with my new shrinking body!!

KATINA...
i was on the biotin or many months prior to surgery.
IT doesnt help stop the hair from thinning out but
it helps the new growth come in healthier and faster!

I take 1500 mlgms.

GOOD LUCK! and im looking forward to getting to know you
thru your posts! WELCOME TO THE SITE!
