Difficult as it may seem, I would prefer to have children get used to the natural flavor of food and drinks, and not get them addicted to artificial tastes which can trigger cravings, instead of setting up a heathful eating habit. I realize the beverage makers have a lot at stake, and there are many many people who are employed by these companies. However, I would like for these companies to make an effort at making beverages that are healthy in all aspects. Harping that children will drink more if sweetened is not exactly desirable, considering the effect it will have on the abliity to discern taste.
On the personal side, I never let my children have soda pops when they were small, and to this day (they're in their 20s now) they dislike carbonated drinks. Once when they were 5 or 6 years old, they were each given a can of something soda, and for once, I said they could have it. Well, they both took one sip, said yuck, and didn't want any more. Never did they ask for one after that. I can tell you, in my case, training their taste buds early payed off.
