This has been a subject of concern in the Japanese medical scene for several years now, and the Japanese Diabetes Society has sponsored international symposius during their annual meeting the past few years addressing this problem.
The shift to western type food from the traditional menus and the change of lifestyle is at the root, but also, research indicates that ethnicity (genetics) play a role in the inability to process high fat, high calorie foods compared to those of European origin ethincity.
