Simple. Japanese miso soup!!
Brown seaweed--wakame-- is a staple in Japanese cooking .
Boil water, add table spoon of instant Japanese soup stock granule, add wakame cut to about 1-1.5" length, boil for 1-2mins, add one table spoon miso per 200-300 cc hot water, dissolve, let boil for a min, and you're done.
Another menu.
Wakame and cucumber. Slice wakame into same size as above, slice cucmbers into very thin slices (use a slicer or a food processor if you're not good that good with a knife ). Sprinkle the sliced cucmber with salt, leave for 5 mins or so, then squeeze the extra water out of the cucmber. Prepare dressing, equal amounts of liquid Japanese soup stock (thin with same amount of water if it's concentrated type), vinegar, sugar--or splenda. Mix the wakame and cucumber and add the dressing.
You can subsitute this dressing with ready made sushi dressing if you want to.
P.S. You're sure to find wakame stocked at any food store selling material for Japanese food. |

Wakame would be too thick to make into "nori" seaweed paper.
Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if red and green seaweed, which are the materials for seaweed paper, contained the same stuff, even if to a different degree.
Incidentally, wakame, and seaweed in general, are supposed to be good for your hair, too.

On another note.
I was just looking up the energy and nutrition contents for "nori" seaweed paper.
For 100g, around 180 kcals.
Now, get this, for that 100g, the PROTEIN content is around 40g!!
About the same amount of carbs, and fat is just under 4 g.
Plenty of minerals and vitamins as well.
Calcium around 200mg, iron, around 10mg.
Now, of course, 100g of seaweed paper is quite a lot but when you consider, the amount of protein you get in meat is on the average, something like 20g per 100g, do you realize what excellent food seaweed paper is?!
And I'm munching on some as I am typing this.

Yup......there's a type that's sweetened (not by sugar, but by "mirin" which is unrefined rice alcohol that's used as a sweetner in Japanese cooking) that's easier to munch on than the regular sushi seaweed paper. |
