This possibility was discussed in a workshop I attended. The basis of this idea is that bypassing the uppermost section of the small intestines some how changes the production of certain intestinal hormones and changes insulin resistance and pancreatic performance. However, there's no exact evidence yet of what happens where to substantiate the hypothesis, so though some surgeons are exploring the idea, it still has a very long way to go before becoming a standard treatment, especially because the long term effects will have to be proven.
