Default Surgery Process

Hello everyone,

Congrats to everyone on their weight loss! I have struggled with my weight for the last decade and was told by a civilian Dr. that I would be an ideal candidate for weight loss surgery. I am 100 lbs over weight, with a hypo-active thyroid and a condition called PCOS. After 7 years of being with my boyfriend we tied the knot a few months back. We now live on a small naval base in VA and I am now enrolled in Deers and Tricare Prime. I have no idea where to start with my weight loss journey. Where do I make my initial appt? I am not sold on the surgery and am not looking for a "quick fix" but I would like to gather as much information as possible. Do I need a referral? Has anyone gone through the surgery process, or any weight loss program with the Navy? I appreciate any help that I get.

Thanks!

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Being a disabled Navy Vet, I had my surgery in the VA system. My VA primary care doc referred me to the bariatric department at the big VA hospital for my area. Once I got the referral, the next step was schedule to attend the "welcome to bariatric surgery life" indoc class. That class gave the basic info on what the surgery consists of and what to expect. The hospital I went to only did the RNY style surgery and the doc said if we wanted to do the band or another type, to schedule to go to the other hospital instead. So, probably you're next step would be to talk to your primary care doc and get a referral to the weight loss surgery dept.
I was stationed at Little Creek, Virginia and really miss it back there

Default Thank you!

I really appreciate your response! We just left Little Creek, I fell in love with it there. We are now in Dahlgren, which I like too. I will make an appointment with my primary care and see how that goes. I am hopeful that I will be able to shed these pounds and keep them off! Thank you again!

I am not military but can assure you this is "no" easy fix. Hang in there. Read a lot and ask a lot... good luck.

Thanks for the support everyone. I have done a TON of reading on it so far. I have also changed my diet over the last 4 months. I have only lost 11 pounds, but it is a start. I have also started biking, which I never knew I would love so much!

Welcome , you wil love it here.
You are on the right track. Talk with your primary care Dr. and go from there. Go to the informational meeting that the surgeon will have. Read lots here and learn as much as you can. Then make a decision.

Well, it has been a little while since I wrote. I made an appt with my PCM and she was incredibly kind. She said I was a good candidate and gave me a referral to a surgical center. My husband and I went to the seminar yesterday, which proved very informational. I scheduled an appt to talk with the surgeon and discuss which of the surgeries would best suit me. Within the next couple of days I should learn more regarding the time frame of when I can have the procedure done. I have done so much research that I can say I am ready for this life changing event!

Thanks for the update. Glad your PCM is on board with you and the ball is rolling now
