| WNY Thinking
I'm from WNY, Lockport, and am awaiting my first visit to the bariatric surgeon. The seminar he gave was informative but seemed to push the LapBand. From what i've read, the long term results aren't very good with banding. So I'm thinking 'Roux-en-Y' Gastric Bypass. Anyone else going through the thinking process?

If that surgeon ONLY does lap band, he will tend to "push" it. Now more surgeons are offering more WLS choices.
I originally went in to talk about lapband. I changed my mind and went with By Pass.
1.) I could lose more weight with ByPass
2.) I didn't want a port and to be tied to a doctor FOREVER.
SInce that time I have met people who had a lap band and later had a bypass.
Some have told me horrid stories about lap band.
I have also met people who are very happy with their lap bands; no major problems,
and done well with weight loss.
You may want to consult another surgeon.
I talked to my internist quite a bit before seeing a surgeon.
There is a lot you can read on your own as well, especially on this site.
Another new choice coming out is the Sleeve.
YOu need to do some homework before deciding.
Good luck!!

Good luck with your process.
(((((HUGS))))) May your journey go well.
Your thought process is what a lot of members on this board went through. There are a lot of threads on this, so read read read, to a lot of search and research, knowledge is power.

Please read and research. Don't get the surgery the doctor wants, get what you know will work better for you. It is your body, your choice. Maybe find another doctor that gives you more choice.

| thanks for the response!
the Dr. does do multiple types of WLS, and supposidly helps pick 'the right one' for the patient.... guess I'll see at my appt. 10/6. Maybe LapBand is easier or more lucrative for him... or maybe he really likes it... he does show all types of surgery at his seminar... just seems to highlight the band...
I am definately doing my research!

I had Dr. Dibenedetto as my surgeon (3 weeks ago) and he simply said "if you want me to do the bypass, I'll do whatever you want". I chose it for the same reasons that others have mentioned...it's a harder life regimen to maintain...so make sure that you are mentally prepared to be in this for life, no matter which surgery you chose! You must do what they tell you to do in order to be successful. I have had no issues to date and I hopefully will keep it that way. :-)

Thanks! I have accepted your friend request!! Yes, the preop protein shakes 3 times daily started 5 days before surgery. You need to shrink the liver to minimize the chance of an open surgery. Mine was lap. The post-op diet is: upon release from hospital on day 4 or 5, you start clear liquids with protein shakes. Stay on that phase 3 for 2 weeks. At post-op appt, start Pureed foods. Stay on that till week 8 post op and then he switches to solid foods. I'm on Pureed foods now.
Surgery was on Tuesday..and they discharged me on Friday afternoon. I walked every 4 hours as told by the nurses. I went home with lortab pain meds liquid.
I returned to working yesterday, but I work at home. I travel as a clinical monitor for work...my first trip out to Cincinnati is next week on Thursday and Friday, which I feel will not be an issue.
Good luck and let me know how things are going!
Heidi

Sure thing...nope it had nothing to do with weight maintaining...it was simply because they are so busy and I had to wait about 3 months to get that last appointment with him.
