Hello Members,
As I am new to this forum, but gone through different resources for weight loss solution. I do not want to chew tablets or medicines. I know about phentermine, didrex and acomplia all these are weight loss pills also read articles and gone through weight loss websites. Having one of them in my signature, it’s good, but I do not know more about Lap Band Surgery and all its pros and cons as well…Is it costly?, it costs me near about $15,000 to $30,000. Any help about Lap Band Surgery would be appreciated.

I personally, after SEVERAL years of research, opted to go with gastric over the band. I know a couple of people who have been successful with the band, but I know a bunch more who weren't. It depends on the desired weight loss (which is more significant with gastric) and your mindset.....I needed the discipline of gastric...I knew I could cheat with the band...I can cheat with gastric too, but it will make me ill....
shop around & interview surgeons.......I got the gastric done for less than $20k....

I too decided to go with the GBY instead of the band. I read about a lot of complications with the band getting "lost" in scar tissue and having to have follow up surguries to remove it and go to GBY anyway.
I also need the discipline that the bypass gives. I have still tried to "cheat" and eat bad stuff over the past year but I always pay for it and it helps me to stay on track.

I also have heard about the band getting lost in the scar tissue around the stomach. My surgeon discussed that as a possiblity at my initial seminar. Scary stuff. Not only is the Bypass more structured with what you can eat, you don't have to keep going in for adjustments the rest of your life. I also don't want something that can be easily reversed. I NEED the restriction and structure. As for cost.. I'm not sure.. my insurance pays for this.

the band was not the right choice for me, continue your research, talk it over with surgeons and make the best choice to fit your long term goals.
Good luck

I forgot to add...my surgeon does a LOT of revisions (from band to gastric). He went in to take one woman's band out and had to leave it in there...it was imbedded into the wall of the stomach....how scary is that...???
Something about a foreign object and a life of "fills" didn't appeal to me....I opted to have my digestive tract re-routed over what I saw as CONS of the band....

I would invite you to go to http://drsimpson.net
This is a surgeon who has done ALL three procedures, gastric bypass, duodenal switch/bpd and band and has chosen to do ONLY the band now.
He has an on line seminar and tells why in this seminar.... enjoy! Lots of videos on site also. I know many highly successful lap band patients.

Aloha,
I initially was seeking to have the lap band surgery, since a friend of mine had successful results from this procedure. After meeting with the surgeons and looking up additional information, I reluctantly decided to go with the Gastric bypass method. All I can say now... is thank goodness that I made the right choice for myself. This method provides a higher motivation to separate myself from "sweets" , fats and carbs. It is more than portion control...its a lifestyle change. Remember that no procedure is a miracle cure...but it is a "tool" to help us change . The real work and decisions are made by us.
My one question to my surgeon was: which method has shown more lasting results....5yrs + (post surgery). The answer was gastric bypass.
I hope you'll find a suitable solution for your choice....good luck...we'll be here to support you.

| I needed the most foolproof method possible. I was never so thankful as when I discovered I'd get ill from more than 8-9 gr sugar. It's been the biggest blessing of my life (medically speaking). Having said this, I know banders and RNY pts and both have had varying degrees of success and a few failures. Doing your headwork is really the most important part of the process; What do your docs recommend for you? why? Good luck with your decision ~ regardless of your choice, you're welcome to go thru your journey with us Welcome~~~
