| Hi everyone - newbe here I had a baby 8 months ago and I am now heavier then I was before he was born. I have always wondered about surgery and went to my first information class last night. Like most of you, I want to be able to do things I enjoy, biking, riding horses, etc, but food is my enemy I qualify for surgery and my health insurance will pay for it, I just have to do a few dietitian appointments and as it stands right now my first appointment would be December 11. I know 3 people who have had the surgery and have kept weight off for a considerable amount of time, over 5 years. I worry that with my Yo Yo dieting I would be a statistic that may gain the weight back. This is the reason I worry about surgery. I was wondering if it is possible to attempt the bypass diet without having surgery, if it has been successful for anyone can you let me know what you did and how you did it? |

Of course it's possible to change the way you eat. And that'll go some ways to help you, but with the tool RNY gives you, you have help in controlling portion size (because physically, there just isn't any room for more!!) and also, for many people, the dumping mechanism limits the body's willingness to accept certain foods, mainly sugars and fats.
The surgery is not a "diet", though. It is nothing less than a complete transformation in your relationship to food. Food goes from master to servant. Where formerly so many of us lived to eat, we now eat to live. We go from gluttony to good nutrition. There is nothing of a fad diet about this.
It is a difficult way to lose weight. Those who say it's easy have no clue what they're talking about. It requires complete and total commitment for the rest of your life. It's hard, but it's the only way I ever found that works.
Do your research and ask any questions you can't find covered here. Arm yourself with knowledge for the best results.
Good luck!

Research everything you can get your hands on. When considering WLS vs WLS "diet" as CT said WLS surgery is not a diet. A diet is what most of us spent much of our lives trying to no avail. WLS gives you a small pouch as a tool as well as the malabsorption assistance. WLS eating is NOT easy but it is worthwhile. Remember WLS is a LIFESTYLE change. Much of the success is beating the mental game. I'm almost 3 months out, have had a few rough patches but overall have no regrets about my surgery. Considerations...you HAVE to be in this for the long haul. You have to want to be healthy and live longer MORE than you want to continue over eating and abusing your body.

if you like biking, riding, walking, just fit that into a schedule and learn what , how, and when to eat the good things for you and the weight will come off without surgery, surgery is kinda just a tool, learn how to use your mindset for food as a tool. you would be surprise how good some veggies are when your HUNGY! LOL , good luck to you! , i love steamed veggies, cut back on salt, etc,, , i kinda started eating real food about 4 months ago and haved gained back about 7-10 pounds as long as you exercise EVERYDAY you can control it, im fixing to get back on my program as soon as some of the real grocies i got are gone, then it will be veggies, chicken/turkey/lots of water, , i was doing about 600-800 calories a day, kinda extreme but worked for me very quickly, dont reccommend that for anybody though.

Thanks everyone. I know I have a lot of research ahead of me. I haven't gotten some great ideas on where to start through from all of your posts on the forum.
Thanks

Check out Botzz's threads and posts. You will have to go back a year and half for the beginning of his journey, though.

Hi and welcome!
I am going for surgery next January and since I will need the proteins for the rest of my life I decided I should try some (not only to see which ones I like because most people say their taste changed a lot after surgery but msotly because I never had them - had some shakes in the past and they were so bad I never even tried again!) and I am also trying to count the amount of water I drink. I think about it not like trying to eat what I will eat after surgery but just a little training.
So every now and then I bring some protein bars to work and I will choose one to be my lunch. And I am making a list of likes/dislikes and how I feel. So far I had one (Atkins - brownie) that really tasted good and I was completely full after it.
At night I will just cook and eat normally. I think I will lose some weight before the surgery this way but it's not enough for me to just say I can diet like this because I am a typical emotional eater so I can maintain my weight for some time until something happens and I eat like crazy. That's why I need the tool of WLS; I do need the physical limitation.
Do your research around and see what's best for you.
Cheers!

I haven't checked in (my life has been sorta busy... that time of year) but I'm Sue and I'm at my Weight Watcher's goal and was awarded lifetime membership in October... Have my second monthly weigh-in I think next week (it's free if you are at goal or below) and have no problems.... I'm several lbs below goal....
Is it possible to lose without surgery... sure...
But it's kind of the same principle whether you have surgery or not... it's a lifetime commitment.
The "tool" I used offers helps for emotional eating and supportive meetings and a really healthy eating program so that helps me....
I found it took me several tries - this is my 4th time on Weight Watchers and I won't mention all the other diets I've been on and I'm 65 years old but it looks like it's working this time... and eventually when I went on the program for health (to get rid of GERD) that helped a lot... hubby is on the program for health also (get his sugar levels down - he has diabetes) - it worked well... after 5 weeks, his sugar levels were down to normal.
Health worked the best for me... I know if I eat more than my program allotment, I will get nasty reflux and I so don't want to go there....
Anyway, good luck on your journey... whatever tool you choose! and welcome here....
This is a great place!!!
*hugs*
