Default Question about setting a goal weight

I have a question how did you all decide what goal weight you were going to set for yourself? I have mine set right now at 150 but I will likely go to at least 145 if not a bit lower. However, I work at curves and everyone keeps saying they think I should not go no lower then what I am right now. Which I can't understand, they keep saying you don't want to be any smaller but i do. And to me I don't think 145 is at all too low, I think I could easily go down to 130 and still be ok. I am 5'5" and have a large frame. But according to my fitday BMI chart it says a healthy weight for me is 111.2 all the way to 150.2. I of course do not think 111.2 would be good at all for me, I do agree that would be WAY too small.

So how did everyone else go about deciding what their goal weight should be?

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

My surgeon set my initial goal weight based on BMI and percentage of Excess Weight Loss. I blew through that in free-fall! My body decided that it wanted to be where I am now, so 17 months later, I'm still here! I have never been this weight that I can remember in my adult life! Heck, I'd have been happy at 184 like the doc said, but my body set the goal, and I just hung on for the ride!!

We never really set an actual weight to end at, I told my doc that I would be totally cool with weighing 200 pounds after carrying around my 450 pound body for so long, if I could get to the 200 mark I would be tickled pink.
I do remember at one point someone telling me for my height and body build I should be around 165-170 lbs for a healthy weight but I haven't been near those numbers since I was a freshman in highschool ........ummmm 25 or some years ago. lol I honestly don't see myself ever seeing those low of numbers but you just never know I guess.

I agree with Perfesser. It seems like I often agree with him, man of wisdom! :-)

I think your body will set the numbers for you. My goal, I am post-op, is 150 lbs. Which I think is normal for my height but when I told my mom that she said, "Thats too small!" I dunno what my body will do but I can't help but wonder what I will look like at 150 lbs.

I set my goal randomly at 168 which at the time of setting it seemed a dream away, but as it is coming ever closer it blows my mind, but I am not hung up by those numbers I have listened to CT and I will just let my body decide where it wants to go..... so stick to the rules and enjoy the ride!!

The normal range of Body Mass Index is 18.5-24.9. So, the fitday chart is correct in setting the weight range between approx. 112 and 150. The median is 132. 145 would put your BMI at 24.1 which is a pretty good number, so I'd say it's realistic.
However, you need to take into consideration how long and how much you have carried excess weight, and whether you are big boned or not. If you have been at 112 all your life, that isn't a bad number, but if you've been relatively heavy for most of your life, 112 would be too low.
Your present BMI isn't that shabby a number, and if people have been used to seeing you at a higher weight, then it is likely that they will tell you you've lost enough because they have never seen you small. It's from the difference in preception. However, giving it a go at losing another 10lbs or so is not that bad an idea, since it will put you in the uppermost number of normal range BMI.

yes it depends on so many factors and in the end your body decides where it's sweet spot is. You'll probably go lower than a 'goal weight' and then back up some and settle there

if I'd gone by the BMI chart I should have been in the 135-145 range. The very very lowest I got weight wise was 155 and was VERY thin at that point where people in my life were really concerned about my health, although I was running and weight training at the time so my body fat was quite minimal.

I thinkt he best 'goal weight' was the one my PCP in Mo gave me. He's a long time marathon runner and weight trainer..very fit and he said that 175 for MY body was the best place for me to stay. That 175-188 range is the 'after' picture which was taken 5 yrs post op.

Thanks so much everyone for the information. I think I will try to shoot for between 145 - 150 pounds but listen to my body and see exactly where I should be. I'm pretty happy about where I'm at now but I do want to loose a bit more. I have tons of energy which is great. I am wanting to try to tone my abs a lot more, that's the main place I still feel like I have left to loose. The rest is ok it seems my stomach area has always been my "problem" area and it seems to be the last thing willing to go. I'm hoping I can keep working out and get it toned up some.

The best way to set a goal weight is to visit your PCP, have him/her pinch you etc and see what he/she says.

I happened to stumble across the BMI scale and how it originated and found it very interesting:

Quote:
Belgian polymath Adolphe Quetelet devised the equation in 1832 in his quest to define the "normal man" in terms of everything from his average arm strength to the age at which he marries. This project had nothing to do with obesity-related diseases, nor even with obesity itself. Rather, Quetelet used the equation to describe the standard proportions of the human build—the ratio of weight to height in the average adult. Using data collected from several hundred countrymen, he found that weight varied not in direct proportion to height (such that, say, people 10 percent taller than average were 10 percent heavier, too) but in proportion to the square of height. (People 10 percent taller than average tended to be about 21 percent heavier.)
The new equation had little impact among the medical community until long after Quetelet's death.
Why are doctors still measuring obesity with the body mass index? - By Jeremy Singer-Vine - Slate Magazine
If you are 5'5" and large boned and have a certain amount of muscle tissue which is very compact but weighs heavy... (think of a lb of fat as a truckful of feathers and a lb of muscle as a chunk of lead)... then 112 would seem WAY low for you. You might actually be at a good weight NOW!

The most accurate guage of "fatness" is having your bodyfat percentage measured BY DUNKING (some of the other methods are inaccurate and only good for comparison in results).

Your bodyfat, if you are over 40 should be around 28 to 30 percent - if you are younger then shoot for around 25 percent. (They like older folks to be a bit less lean because having a bit of bodyfat, it turns out, makes you more likely to survive a catastrophic health event (like a heart attack)

This is how I set my goal... my doctor (who was very fat conscious herself) pinched me here and there during her examination and said "I think 180 would be a good weight for you". I asked her if she would write an RX to that effect and she said she would and so this is what I gave to Weight Watchers to set my goal.

I tell folks, it's a good idea to see a PCP before embarking on a calorie restriction program anyway.

I'm 37 and right now my body fat is about 31% (well it was the last time it was checked at curves). But I know the thing we use there to measure it isn't accurate as in like DUNKING is.

When I first started my weight loss goal I told my DR I wanted to get to 150 and he said that should be good.

I'm hoping I can hit the 150's by the first of the year.
