Figured I'd chime in on this one
Honestly...I came on here when I was researching getting weight loss surgery done. I wanted to know EVERYTHING I could...I wanted to make sure that my journey with weight loss surgery was as successful as it could be.
I read and read and read some more...then I was released from the program because in their opinion "I lacked the dedication to make weight loss surgery a success." It was a huge blow to me. (there's a LONG story behind that, and if you're really interested, I'll find the thread and link it here...but otherwise, I digress...) I got depressed, and stopped coming here, and put on another 20 lbs...but I already weighed so much I really didn't notice.
This past spring (it'll be a year ago May 4th) I had to go in for surgery to repair a hernia, so after that there was infection and a whole "thing" that went on with that. by the time August came after being in and out of hospital all spring/summer I was down 40 lbs. That for me was an epiphany...suddenly being 40 lbs lighter, able to very suddenly feel the difference, made me KNOW that there was no way I could go back to the way I was living. (or dying as the case may very well be...at my highest weight I was 265 lbs and only 5'5" tall) So I vowed to at the very least maintain what I'd lost, and lose more if I could. I was also given a referral to another surgeon who would gladly perform WLS on me...but it wouldn't be till sometime this spring. Both of these together were enough of a boost that I came back...and again, I read and read and read some more. I wanted to learn what I would need to know/do after surgery, and I did. I then made the conscious decision to apply as many of the "pouch rules" that I would be living after surgery, before surgery...my thought being if I make the rules "habit" now...shouldn't be as big a shock post op.
So here we are a year later...down some 90+ pounds, and only 40 left to go to goal. I don't promise it will be easy...but for me it worked. I focused on getting protiens first, veggies next, carbs only if there's room. I had gotten a post card from the first weight loss nutritionalist when I was going there that showed using common household objects what a serving actually is, before this, no word of a lie, I was 39 years old, with such a bad case of portion distortion, that I truly had NO CLUE how much I was supposed to be eating.
I now do three meals, with snacks, my "dinner plate" is now, when I'm home, a bread and butter plate...no longer the 10' big corelle dinner plate that held MUCH more than I needed...but I never sat down that I didn't fill that plate, eat it all, and often go back for seconds. Now, as much as my husband giggles about my tiny plate, I can fill that, eat it, and be satisfied...knowing that a snack is not so far off.
I know this is long and involved, and if you're still reading this far down, thank you. But long story short (yes...I know...too late! LOL) My surgery in May gave me a boot in the rear to get me going...but this place mixed with my own determination, and dedication has gotten me where I am now. One of my goals, when I reach goal, is to walk in to the first clinic, show them my before picture and let them know that I had the dedication to do it...without them.
Feel free to message if there's anything I can do to help, and welcome to RR...you'll be family here in no time!!
