| kinda of worried here....
I watched an episode of Grey's anatomy...I know it is TV, but they discuss real diseases and all. This one episode was about a woman who's heart wall collapsed and she had a heart attack.
She had lost 100 pounds in one year and that is my goal.......
They said that she had lost to much heart muscle and that even at 200 pounds, she had become anorexia. How in the world could this be?
I am kind of scared now to continue my goal to try to lose 100 pounds in a year. Does anyone have information regarding this issue for me and what to do to keep from losing heart muscle mass??

Well this surgery comes with some complications!!!!!! I wong deny that.
NOW that reason is a key to eating PROTEIN PROTEIN PROTEIN as a post opper so we loose the fat not the muscle!!!! AND excersising to must help.
I am sure DOCSANAE will put in her knowledge here for you!
hugs
but it can happen also...i had a full cardiologist workout to get my pre op clearance. I had many tests even an angiogram to clear me to be in
good health for the surgery. MY surgeon required I see one, this as well as other
tests.

See, I am concerned, as I am not having the surgery and I am doing this all by myself. I have not had any tests, I can't afford any tests. I have cut my calories way down during the week and I eat what I want on weekends. I am losing 10 pounds a month....
I know surgery has risks, but losing weight period has risks??? Then there are risks of staying heavy also. I am so confused.

OK. Lets all take a deep breath. Losing heart muscle happends when you are anorexic, or dont eat at all, or have some type of illness related to losing very fast. if you are dieting and exercising chances are this cannot happen to you. TV, specifically these hospital type shows tend to place emphasis on things that RARELY happen. I was an EMT for 10 years never saw half the illnesses they show on ER, House, and GRey's lol! so dont take it to heart. lose it slowly, take vitamins, eat right and exercise. You will be fine.

WELL the surgeons will make u do the preop clearances of some sort its usually not optional thing.
and
YES for me the risks walking around morbidly obesite out weighed the surgery risk but i have small kids it was hard but i knew staying that way
i would have a stroke or heart attack at any moment.
I went for it...but i really doubt surgeons will do the surgeon without
alot of PRE OP tests and clearances.

Exercise to keep your muscle tone including the heart muscles is a key.
With anorexics, they really avoid eating anything that's nutrition to your body, and they go to extremes.
Since you have a cousin (I think you said) who had the surgery, and you are trying to follow her pattern of eating, which means, you have to get in 50-60g protein per day, and a lot of water, too, and you take vitamins and supplements, things shouldn't be as extreme as where anorexics go to. Also, anorexia is a state of mind on the opposite scale of binge eating--it's psychiatric more than anything else, and not a person trying to lose weight to regain control of their health.
It would be best if you could check in with your PCP from time to time, have some blood work done, and at least an ECG if possible.
And yes, TV dramas just load up a heck of a lot into one episode so don't panic. That's just what they are, drama....and all the drama, oh....

| My concern
Doc...
Actually, I basically am following her portion sizes and eating healthier foods. I am not measuring my protein at all. I am eating 1 1/2 - 2 cups of food three times a day. and snacking in between meals 1-2 times a day of healthy foods (veggies or fruit). Saturdays, I tend to eat a bit more of the foods I miss on weekday.
My meals, except breakfast is: my main meat course and veggies. SO, I assume that I am getting enough protein.
I will exercise more, as I drop off more weight, I want to lose 30 more pounds and then start exercising more often.
Thanks for the information, I feel much better.

I'll have to post a chart from my health care provider (mostly RN based) NUTRITION CLASS..i just found that book the other day in fact..
It lists the side effects of anorexia and it's very interesting to compare this with side effects of WLS...in some respect it puts our BODY into a 'state' of anorexia with the malabsorption which is WHY WHY WHY we must eat a higher protein level forever..not just until we 'get thin'...
----now I am NOT saying we are anorexics!! don't miss understand that at all please!.
Refer the the "why's" of why we need to eat that protein intake in Doc's post..but it's a very interesting comparison ...

| Worried
But...since I did not have the surgery, I don't have a absorbtion problem. I am wondering if eating the protein will apply to me as it does surgery patients.
I am losing about 10 pounds a month by dieting. I try to remember to take a vitamin, but sometimes forget here and there. 10 pounds a month would be 120 pounds in a year....if I kept losing at that rate.
It just freaked me out because this woman had lost 100 pounds in year and had developed a heart problem and anorexia from it....unless it was just over exaggerated and she lost the weight by starving herself to death. I am far from starving. I eat what I want on weekends and diet on weeks. I have not gave up all fat, just watching my fat intake. Watching my veggies and fruits too.
