Default A new start

Hey there, I recently joined these forums to get information on wls and have done a lot of reading and I believe I have learned a lot about some of the surgeries/options out there, I have decided to give this a full on all in attempt without the surgery before I make the decision to go through with a surgery.

I shall attempt a low carb reasonable food diet, meaning no junk and I am trying a 1200 calories a day for a start and will go from there adjusting when necessary if necessary. just as a reference I am 6' 4'' large build (lifted a lot of weights through my late teens and early 20's) and have gained a lot of weight in the last 7 years or so. there is more info on my blog (which I started today) The Chronicles of one Mans trip to the Half (also posted in my sig line) I invite you all to take a look and follow my journey in my blog, I will also try and update here as much as possible as I know that I need a support base from people who understand the struggles of being "Hefty" as I lovingly refer to my weight . I do look forward to hearing any advice or stories that any of you have about losing weight.

Thanks for taking the time to read my posts and a double thank you if you visit my blog, because like I said I know I need a support base to vent and report to.

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Welcome to the board, thank you for joining us.

I take it you are male. Then, 1200 kcal diet is a tad low for you. Medically speaking, for men, the lowest amount of calories recommended is 1400-1600 kcals. This is because men have more muscle than women, so they burn more calories than women. FYI, for women, the recommended amount is 1000-1200 kcals.

Also, are you doing this on your own, or are you going to be followed by your PCP? I am asking this, because, if you have your PCP record your progress, then you will have a medically documented weight loss effort. This will help you keep a check on your overall health (as sometimes, extreme dieting can result in some unwanted and unexpected deficiencies and illnesses) and also have medical record handy, just in case you decide to go for the surgery in the end, and your insurance asks for medical documentation.

Exercise is also a must for balanced weight loss. Even if you exercised a lot when you were young and more fit, your muscles have probably weakend, so build up your muscles again, step by step. Go slowly at first, and as your muscles get stronger, increase your excercise. This will help you burn more fat, and help you keep and build your muscles as well.

A well balanced healthy diet and good exercise go hand in hand for healthy weight loss.

I'll be looking forward to hear of your progress.
((((((HUGS)))))) May your journey go well.

DocSanae I very much appreciate your response, Thank you. by PCP do you mean my Family doc? I am doing this on my own at the moment, and where exercise is concerned I do plan on doing as much as I can do, mostly being walks along with pushups, sit ups and resistance exercises as much as I can do. I did not mention this but I have a back injury that I got about 8 years ago which limits my exercise only as far as the injury lets it go. for the most part just getting around etc is ok as far as the injury goes, but when I push it I do feel it and end up with some pain at times.

I figured on 1200 because My aunt did that and lost a lot of weight (100 lbs at least if I was guessing, she won't tell me how much exactly) I knew there was a difference with the men vs women thing but will doing 1200 hurt? meaning is it an unsafe number as far as I go being a large fella? should I stick to something a little higher like you mentioned between 1400 and 1600? I obviously failed weightloss 101 thus far so I apologize for all of the questions

Me

PS: the bolded part of the quote is 100% correct, I don't feel like I use to as far as muscularity goes. also I didn't mention I am 34 years old.

Keep those Qs coming, that's what we're here for.

Yes, I mean your family dr. Have him/her keep a record of your weight everytime you go in. Keep him in the loop of what you are doing, so he can give you advice where it's needed.

Yes, 1200 will be too low for you, esp since you are tall. You could end up lacking in the very basic nutrients that you need to keep your body healthy, and this will actually hinder your weight loss. Also, if you are on too low calories, your body will go into starvation mode, and just hold onto everything you eat, which will also slow down your weight loss. So, you need to get in just enough to let your body know that you aren't starving, and will let go of the fat you have stored in yourself and use it as energy.

Your aunt did fine with 1200 because she is a woman, and I imagine she isn't as tall as you--so she doesn't need as much as you do to stay healthy.

Since healthy weight is relative to your height, in other words, how tall you are is going to be the deciding factor in how much you weigh is healthy, obviously, how much food is healthy will differ with how tall you are, too, as well as whether you are male or female. As I wrote, the basic body composition is different. Men have more muscles, less fat than women, so the amount of food you need to stay healthy is different, even at the same height.

Good luck!!

Clancy thanks for the welcome, and again I thank You Docsanae for your advice. I am going to raise the caloric intake above 1200, I have done more reading and it does seem like 1200 is on the low side for me. I still want to keep it as low as possible without depriving my body of the nutrients that it needs to stay healthy and avoid any problems.

Does it sound acceptable to do say 1300 during the week and bring it to say 1500 for the weekends (mostly because thats when we go out etc so the extra buffer would be nice) or will the fluctuation to 1500 2 days a week affect the way the body reads the intake? does that even matter with a low cal diet? the fluctuation I mean.
