Yes this is all such a mind trip. I was watching Oprah yesterday and I asked my husband if I was getting closer to her size. (I am built a lot like her) He said, "Honey, you are smaller than Oprah now." I was like NUH UH, no way, there is no way I am smaller than Oprah. He kept assuring me I was.....it was just weird, I still don't see myself how I am now....and again I reiterate, I have a long way to go, I am faaaaaaaaar from average!

| I don't really think of it as vanity ~ I think of it as 1) learning who we are now and what we like, dislike and what we want to do about it and 2) meeting our potential. At my largest, appearing a young, active and attractive woman wasn't really an option. I always looked very matronly, regardless of how I wore my hair, makeup or clothes. I'm 44 and DH is 45. When we were in our mid 20's I was introduced as his mother!!! So, for me, being a reasonably attractive, normal weight 40 something is rather intriguing. I spend more time on how I look now. I dont gush at every mirror I pass (~~~look at me~~~) but, sometimes, I do look and think - oh my gosh, that's me!

Kara, I don't think you are superficial at all, and any of us that have gone through this surgery understands exactly how you feel. You have done a great job and are absolutely beautiful!

I know it's been awhile since the original post. I wanted to say you're in a very GOOD place from what you said.. that you are very happy with who you are, even though you don't feel you are at the ideal size in your mind. THAT is the way is should be. To be proud of the progress you've made.. but also to not define yourself or how you feel inside based on purely physical things.
it seems to always be a battle in our minds (whether to be confident in what we've become, or to compare ourselves to other people or our own past). I choose confident.. most of the time! I actually started getting bitter after losing most of the weight and noticing that I was being treated better, by society AND the people that I'd known before! I thought it was terrible that they assumed because I looked better than I did, that I became more worthwhile to know! Man, that pissed me off!
Still.. who cares what they think, or how they react. I didn't do this for them, and you didn't either. Yay for feeling better about our bodies, and happy with our real identities!

Man, that pissed me off! | This has been the area that annoys my sometimes- as I said in another post some people I have know for years and years now suddenly give me tons of attention and hugs....but wouldn't touch me with a 10 foot pole a year ago. I don't get it, but it has taught me to be sure to give my focus to ALL people becuase you never know where they are in life or what they may be going through. The outside is no measure of what a person may really need from you. This has been a good lesson for me. The mind game of WLS is always there, some days it's so easy and great.....others..... not so much. But, it's all part of the journey!

| A wise man once said "that which we persist in doing becomes easier, not that the nature of the task has changed, but that our capacity to do has increased." When we persist in feeling good, it comes easier. When we practice being positive about ourselves, we become more positive about ourselves. Success feeds success! It's a beautiful thing!!
Yeah, this is one major head game!! Such a major league life change messes with your mind major league style! But the only reason we are in this position is because we took actions that put us here. Eventually, we will all learn to trust our success and our photos. Recognizing the process and how it works is a great step to that end. This thread speaks to me differently each time I read it. There is so much here. I just want to "Amen" the quote here by the professor. It is a major head game. I've found myself being negative about some things, and I realize AGAIN what a head game this is. My issues are always centered around caring for myself. I'll get busy and the next thing I know I am not packing a lunch because I wanted to get to work early and get some things done. I've prepared for that now, and I have things at work to eat for lunch. Missed exercising? I can take a walk at work and use the stairs. The all or nothing thinking that was the halmark of my obesity tries to creap in, but the encouragement of this web site reminds me again about how destructive and how NOT TRUE those thoughts can be. I love you all! Becky |
