| Just some thoughts...
After meeting with Craig and Becka this past week, I've been thinking a lot...about my journey...about the whole WLS perspective...I read threads here and I am amazed at how dedicated we seem to be as a group....!
I've been through a lot of crap along the way....bad marriage..did the single mom thing for years....lost a parent....lost a job....I've come to several conclusions....and I think it's important to share insights with our newbies:
1) This WILL be one of the hardest things you've ever done. It will take complete and total dedication.
2) NO MATTER what you hear from others, follow your heart and DO YOUR HOMEWORK. Knowledge is power and you will need that power to succeed.
3) Craig compared this journey to a wedding versus the marriage. The surgery is the wedding....the hard part begins afterward in the marriage! Great analogy and so VERY true. If you don't commit to the marriage, the wedding will wind up not mattering too much at all
4) KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE PRIZE.....you guys have heard me say this for nearly 2 years....and I remind myself of this every day...yes, I'm at goal and really maintaining...but I never let myself lose sight of my prize...my healthier life.
5) If your surgeon does not have a game plan, how will you formulate yours? What are your plans for follow up & support? Put your plan in place and STICK TO IT!!!
6) Do not be misled into thinking you can go back to old habits. My mother-in-law commented that when I got to goal, I could eat again. I explained I would NEVER be able to eat like I used to...and I REALLY don't want to! I've come too far and worked TOO hard to go back.
7) Becka summed me up pretty well...she said I have carbo-phobia...I also have fat-o-phobia....I avoid these 2 items as much as possible. I think that, and pushing my water helped me lose so fast and keeps me maintaining.
8) THE SURGERY WILL NOT FIX YOU....it is a tool...pure & simple. It's UP TO YOU TO WORK YOUR TOOL. Be true to yourself....and COMMIT. It really is THAT SIMPLE.
9) Ask for help....ask questions....POST-OP SUPPORT is SO IMPORTANT...it's like going to church. People go every week as a way to be closer to God, but it helps to hold them accountable, as well. POST OP SUPPORT will help you keep your focus!
10) Embrace your new life....and be proud....whether you are pre-op, planning or post-op...it's a journey that those who haven't gone through will NEVER understand. Don't expect them to....!
just a few things on my mind....I hope it helps anyone who is new....this can be a bumpy ride...strap yourself in & hold on....!!!

OT but you know, the wedding and marriage analogy made me remember something. When I was getting ready for my wedding, I thought to myself, "Okay, never forget that the wedding is just a ceremony and the start of things to come. And, the things to come are what was and is my daily family life, with the exception that now, my husband and I will head our home, instead of my parents heading the home I grew up in. So, what goes on daily will pretty much be the same plus more responsibilities, now that I've changed positions." I honestly think that's what's helped us keep our marriage for over 30 years. I also believe this kind of thinking is what helps me keep a level head. |

Great thoughts Kath. At 4 1/2 months out, it's good to hear these things and not become lazy, but to stay vigilant in our process and goals. Thanks for the reminder and re-focusing our minds on the game plan.

Some may have read in my recent posts I've been saying that the surgery is an event and life after is the real journey. I like the wedding/marriage analogy better. All it takes to be successful is complete and total dedication to making it work.
Don't let any flirters tempt you with goodies brought into the office. Even if they are "free", you may pay a terrible price for them!
Don't be tempted by past relationships with food. The pouch gets jealous real easy, and has the ability to make life very unpleasant!!
Don't get too busy and neglect the pouch or take it for granted or there will some loud and active fights within, and I'd bet on the pouch winning!!
Always remember your pouch. Remember why you two got together in the first place and how good it's been to you, and be loving and considerate to it. It will make your life much more rewarding, and you will reach your goals happily together.
Hey, you can string this analogy out quite a ways!! Thanks for posting it, Kath! Anyone else want to tack on some more points along these lines? There has to be only a few hundred or so more!!
