You know I am sitting here watching The Biggest Loser finale. The doctor for the show made a comment about people who have bariatric surgery as a means to lose weight and that it's not necessary. That all we really need to do is eat differently and exercise and the weight will come off because those people are proof of that.
For a second, I thought to myself, "why am I having this surgery? I can just try harder to lose the weight on my own." But the problem with that is these people are put on a camp where all they do everyday is exercise and eat right under supervision. I mean they have made some amazing accomplishments and I know it took a lot of hard work. But I guess I hate it when people down those who had or will have WLS.
Anyway, I think all those who have had it or are having it are very courageous and brave and inspiring people!! God bless you all!!

Yeah, I was watching. He made a comment that was something about people of their size, about 1 in 10 die in the first year after surgery. I don't know if those stats are in any way true, BUT Shay and Daniel were both close to 500 lbs and most surgeons will not operate on someone that heavy for that very reason. They would've had to lose down to a certain weight to be able to have the surgery safely. But using a comment like that on such a popular show is part of why there are so many misconceptions about weight loss surgery.
I remember reading an article where Ali or one of the other past contestants were talking about their workout routines and they were like 8 hour a day workouts. I don't know too many people who has time to work out 8 hours a day.

| For someone to say that WLS is the easy way out is so untrue!!! It is the hardest thing I have ever done. I think before anyone can say anything they need to walk a mile in our shoes, I am so glad that I had it done. I was taking 14 pills a day before surgery......now I take only 2. I wanted to live to see my grandchildren grow up......without surgery I might not have been here to enjoy them everyday!!!! My blood sugar was in the 400's before and now it is NORMAL!!! NO MORE DIABETES MEDS!! I hope the comments on the show dont have a very bad effect on peoples lives. It is hard enough to make the decision to have the WLS without people in the limelight saying negative things!! I am so MAD!!!!

Thank you both for you responses. I saw that my post was moved so I thought I offended someone...lol. It just made me really upset that he said that. I guess because I am so anxious and nervous and scared about having the surgery in the first place. And I feel like I already have a lot against me because some of my family members are not talking to me, I am still kind of immobile from my foot surgery, etc... But I hate taking these 5 needles everyday and 2 pills for the diabetes, which was 480 yesterday and 381 at fasting this morning. I am tired of all the other meds I take and I just got the pain patch. I am home alone most of the time while my husband works. I am only 42. I want to see my grandson grow up and grow old with my husband. I want to see my children be successful. I want to sing comfortably in front of people. Heck I want to fit in the tub, in a movie seat, in a car seat with a seat belt, and ride some rides at the park!
I am just so glad I found this site!

I think that the hardest part of being a post-op is dealing with the negative stereotype about. But then again I lived for over 20 years with the negative stereotype associated with weighing over 200. Sometimes I say to myself (and others) "It's probably a good thing that having approval from others is not necessary for my health."
Best wishes to everyone on their journey. I've lost 175lbs (145 since surgery 1/27/09) and have no regrets.
Deb

Stick with me Angie, your surgery is the day before mine and if we just focus we will make it there. The only thing making you question this surgery should be YOURSELF. Making sure you are doing it for you and your health, and not for everyone else. Don't worry about what 'other' people say about WLS patients, because the truth is yes you will be putting yourself into a stereotype, but you'll be taking yourself out of a worldwide epidemic!

I so agree with all of your post. It makes me so mad to hear anyone put this surgery down because I know without a doubt that it has saved my life. I thank God every day that I was blessed enough to have the opportunity to have RNY. They are all making millions from this show so they don't want anything positive said any weight loss surgery. I have been reading some negative things about this show. I watch it always but I just wonder about behind the cameras what really goes on. Another thing I wonder about is where does all that extra skin go. We all know what happens when you lose a lot of weight with the sagging skin , you cant cover it up that well. Kinda makes me wonder. lol I wish there was a show that deals with this surgery that tells of the wonderful benefits and life changing stories that so many people have. I know there is Big Medicine but they only do a few shows a year and many people don't get those channels. You could say that this old gal is PRO WLS.

Yeah, doc is right. Anyone can do it without surgery, if you live in a SPA!!!
I bet all of us had tried dieting and exercises (and probably many times). We do lose weight, don't we? And then what?
I can say for myself. I can go on crazy diets (I have a *HUGE* resistance to hunger I can be days with only jello), I can exercise (luckily even though I'm big, my knees are GOOD - I've done karate, I've been to the gym doing step lessons and so on) and then I lose weight. THEN, something happens... A relative/friend dies, something wrong happens at my job, I move to another country, etc, etc, etc and then I am too depressed to exercise (or I don't have the option anymore since I moved) and food is just out there to be my best friend on difficult times.
So in my opinion everyone will lose weight through diet and exercise if they can live forever in a controlled place (=SPA). At least I know I could. BUT I do have other objectives in life, I think in the long term I'd just kill myself living like that.
BUT there are some people that can do it even in their normal day-by-day life. The only thing I can say to them: congratulations!

Doggone it, you mean to tell me that I went through all this hassle and I didn't have to? All I had to do the whole time was to eat sensibly and exercise full time instead of working for a living, and I would have lost 120 pounds (and the house and car ) and I could have kept it off??? Sign me up!!! I want some of what that guy's smoking!!!!!
