A work in progress. And you are right CT - that the work/journey never ends. I meant that until we reach our goal weight we are still looking better and feeling better than when we started. Every pound lost is a little win......

Katress-
I get where you're coming from, and think I know what you're trying to get at. It's lovely to hear people giving us compliments after we've lost weight but it doesn't help us when they say we're not fat when seriously, literally we are. They're trying to be supportive, and maybe they really do not see us as fat since we've lost weight. I think what truly matters is how we feel about ourselves though.
This is what I tend to think when someone says I'm "skinny" but I no darn well that at 241 lbs I'm nowhere near "skinny"...
"Nope, I'm still fat but thank God I am not nearly as fat as I used to be!!!"
The term "fat" can mean very different things to each person too. I see "fat" as describing the size of someone's body. I know others who see "fat" as saying someone is unhealthy (Although a person may be fat and very healthy)... and others who see "fat" as a lifestyle and/or way of eating that gets someone to a bigger size.
I guess my point is this... see "fat" as what you will and know that your confidence and love for yourself will come from within no matter what others call you.

We had to ignore it when people called us things that weren't nice, whether true or not, when we were fat. Now as you are in the process of recovery, they'll call you other things, probably nicer, whether true or not. The compliments are well-intentioned; take them as a validation that you're doing the right thing. No, you are not to your endstate "skinny", but comparatively? I think they're commenting on the contrast from where you were to where you are to the extent of their limited vocabulary.
Back in the before times, you shrugged off the names and kept going. Why change now just because it's nice but not objectively accurate? Those who loved you then, still love you. Those who were catty and snide then, ...

Its not what other people say that you should be judging yourself by besides you are only hearing what you can hear anyway (you cant hear what they say behind closed doors).
You did this firstly for yourself and you set a goal and your body will control the speed at which you will change and how much weight you loose. That combined with following a healthy diet and exercise of course.
The fact that we loose weight rapidly (as compared to the years to put it on) it is difficult to mentally process the changes in us at the beginning. As an example it is so funny when shopping for clothes in the first 12 months not believing that you are in the wrong section in the store and no longer wearing XXXL but an M.
For the people who see us daily, the change is not visually as dramatic as it is for someone who only sees you once every 3 months or so. That is the same for yourself, looking at themselves daily and weighing themselves frequently.
Remember as well as people "see" the change in you, they are not seeing the scale. Take some of what they say as a compliment, as their way of giving you recognition for positive changes they see in you and not a medical opinion.
Take comfort and celebrate every small positive change and don't only look for the big dramatic changes.
If your goal in the beginning was to get down to 260 pounds then you would be posting more positively here and celebrating reaching your goal instead of not having as much joy in loosing the 200 you have already lost.
You are on track, you have done remarkably well and you are just posting to get a reality check which we all have to do every once in a while.
While we may have a support system of sorts with spouses, family and friends, unless they have had this procedure themselves it is not the same things and their words, while well-intentioned may conflict with what we know or how we feel and create that sense of confusion and doubt and perhaps causing an unnecessary re-evaluation of what we did, what we are doing and whether it is all working out as planned.

| For Me Constant Visual Reinforcement
I find for me this body image has been the toughest part of the journey. I lost quite a bit of weight prior to surgery and was eating like I had surgery already to prepare myself. But I too was going to the XXXL section at 180 pounds still.
I am so tired of people telling me "You look so good, you are so skinny". I am not skinny as you said. I have not reached my goal and on the BMI I have just reached the OVERWEIGHT CLASS. But I try to keep in mind that they see drastic change. They also see my body with girdle and underwire support. So what they are seeing is not always the actual me...As women we can all relate to that.
For me I know that my body image is all about my self esteem. So I need contant reinforcement that I am reaching my goal. The "you are so skinny" comments do not come into play whatsoever. I take pictures of myself weekly when I go out dancing Friday or Saturday nights. So I can put them up on my wall of fame that I have made myself. I look at the progression every day. So I can constantly remind myself of where I was and where I am going....So that the goal is never ever out of my mind. It is not a fixation, it is a constant reminder to me that I will get there and that it is going to happen.
I have joined a gym, and walk, and dance every weekend, and now I am finally going back to work. Which I need for sure. So just say to them when they say you are so "skinny" thank you very much...I have found that for me...I just need to focus on my goal and what I need to do to get there...Skinny is as skinny does....hey that was quite poetic....I should copyright that..laughing

Dear Rainbow,
You look great and not just from the weight loss - but from the smile of happiness you wear as well. |

katress, if only you knew how many people here that you look up to now as inspirations were absolutely convinced that they were the ONE who would fail at this ...
You aren't done yet. Follow the rules and be patient with your body. She's in charge, not you.
