ok...so i know that being almost 200 lbs down is amazing and i should be happy, and im trying to understand if people are just blowing smoke up my arse or if im just dillusional. but i cant stop referring to myself as FAT and my boyfriend is like "your not fat" and i think that him and my faimily are just being nice and others that i see in the community...i understand that compared to what i used to be, i am significantly smaller. i know i dont look like i used to, so im not that dillusional....but when is it ok to not say "fat" anymore....i am still 260 and that is the weight i have seen a lot of people here at their start weight, and that makes me still feel big.....so what the hell do i do....?

I'm right with you - it's been so tough starting at a higher weight. I ask my hubby now - is that person bigger than me? I have no concept of my size now. I can't even imagine being below 300 lbs. - that's unchartered territory!
Hang in there!

I'm right there with you. I hear people say, "you look so skinny!" I always just laugh. I'm still fighting to stay below 200. It's hard. It's really hard to see yourself as anything other than "fat." I still consider myself to be the fat girl at the karaoke bar. It just takes time to get your mind to catch up. I still look at pictures of myself and zero in on the flabby arms and legs. Grosses me out. But you know, you've done an AMAZING job at your weight loss. And although your current weight might be the starting weight for some people, it's a huge difference for you. Your body frame and height might be completely different. And comparatively, you're not even the same person you were 200 pounds ago.
Hang in there! It's just a slow process to train your mind to see what everyone else sees. If I ever learn the secret to doing it, I'll share it with you! LOL

You are all a work in progress. I would say you all have made alot of progress in fact. But after losing weight we feel so much better and look so much better - I know I do. So we are better then before and we will be all the more better by the time we finish this journey. |

The only time you can say that you are "finished" with this journey is the day they screw the lid shut. You'll always have to struggle in one form or another, because if you ever get complacent or lazy about it, here come the pounds out of the wings and onto center stage!!
For instance, I am working to stay under 170 right now. I don't know if this is a normal regain or if I'm losing focus and growing. Doesn't matter, I just don't want to lose the nice way my pants fit!! (But I was wearing a Small shirt Monday and it felt just fine. How much of this is in my mind? Hard to know!!)
The body image thing is hard to adjust to, too. I thought I'd done okay, but I started a Tai Chi class at lunch today, and going through the meditation movements with my eyes closed, I wasn't real confident of where my body was in space. I'm hoping the class will help me with that. I still find myself over-correcting when running down staircases (no, not with scissors!! )
If you start on the really heavy side (I guess a BMI of over 50, somewhere in that range), you will go through a more severe adjustment than those who start "just" morbidly obese (low 40s). You lose a larger percentage of yourself, so there's a larger hole in your learned muscle response patterns that allow a person to navigate safely.
Peanut has lost about 100 pounds now, which is for her a larger difference than my 120 pounds or so has been for me. And she is a klutz (sorry, dear, but I'm using your own words!! ) Her spatial awareness will take some time to relearn where she is under all conditions of movement. Just like I'm taking Tai Chi to try to retrain my reflexes from who I was to who I am now.
This is stuff they don't tell you in your information seminar!! There is a significant adjustment to go through. What are your choices, though?

I think I understand what you are saying, and if you go by the charts then a BMI of 40ish would still be called FAT. But the point you have to remember is where you started from and how much healthier you are now. I think that's why we emphatize to everyone that your goal isn't to get skinny, it's to get healthy.
I see some people on here who get down to the lower 200's and are feeling so sexy and beautiful, yet other's (like me) never get that feeling no matter how thin we get. I'm still struggling with my body image. It's getting better but I still look in the mirror and see the saggy skin and it looks like fat to me. I can't see how thin I am. It's weird, because I know I'm at an incredible weight, I am having trouble finding clothes because the stores don't carry size 2s and 4s. My brain gets it, but my eyes still can't see it.
I know you're probably looking at my weight and thinking "how can she understand, she's nowhere near where I am" but the body image thing affects all of us. I haven't found the answer yet, maybe I never will. But I hope you can come to be happy with where you are at because you have much to be proud about.

I know it's not too helpful to say this but 8+ years out it's still a struggle. Self image, especially if we've been one of the ones who'd never been 'skinny' ever! is really tough. It's definitely a head issue for sure..Therapy helps with that issue but really..some days are better than others on that.
Remember a number is just a number..it does NOT define you one bit in the end unless YOU let it.
