Is what I often write at the end of my letters to my closest friends.
Yes, BE well, BE happy, not, I wish you well, I wish you happiness.
Wellness, as in health is, I believe, not just a physical state, but the state of one's mind, the frame of one's mind. Happiness is not something that will come to you one day from up above or wherever, it is not something you will find once you get what you craved for.
Being well has been my territory just about all of my adult life, counting med school, which is also is well over half my life. Even if you have to take medication to control certain aspects of your physical condition, it is up to you to do what needs to be done to maintain one's health in the best possible state. There are millions of medications, millions of how-to books, millions of exercises out there, but if you don't get up and exert the neccessary control over your daily activities, not even the best medication the doctors prescribe is going to do any good. If you can't control this, then you don't have a healthy state of mind, a healthy frame of mind, so you're not going to have a sense of physical well being.
Happiness is not a relative thing, but something that comes to you only with your peace of mind, only with liking and loving who you are. You won't find happiness once you get something you covert after, more likely, you will find that you crave for something else....just like when you go for that bad carb, it won't satisfy your hunger, but rather will make you crave for more...and you find yourself unhappy for it.
You have to take stock of what you have, be grateful for what you have, and not look around for what you lack. You need to let go of what you want, and seek what you need, instead. Even if what you have looks bad, take a very good look, and you'll find there's some good there. It's just a point of view. Like, you may hate carrots, how they taste, how hard they are, but, they are loaded with carotins and vitamins, and if you chew on them carefully, they are pretty sweet. Very good for you body, even if they taste ick. In every bad, there's a seed of good. Likewise, in every good, there's a seed of bad. You have to tend carefully so you can have the good seed growing, not the bad. You have to let go of your wants, and seek your needs to fulfil yourself and be happy.
Both wellness and happiness takes a lot of hard, back breaking work.
Reaching goal weight is only halfway to the goal. As Craig says in his article, The
Journey is the Destination ,we are all ongoing work...all through our lives. That's why I write, be well, be happy. We are not going to have wellness and happiness drop by and join us, we have to work hard for it, and only when we work, will we have the satisfaction...that we have worked hard, and deserve our health and happiness.
A healthy mind in a healthy body.
