| 6 days to go till surgery eating all my fav. foods.
I am new. I have my surgery Dec.20th and have been waiting since June. Lost 10 lbs since then and probably gained some back this week because I am eating alot of foods I won't be able to eat once I have the operation. I am getting excited and scared at the same time. Can anyone tell me some of the foods they ate when they came home from surgery or did everyone stick to the protein drinks for several weeks. Which is fine I am kinda counting on that.

First I wanna say welcome to the board and congrats on the upcoming surgery! Secondly, I want to strongly encourage you NOT to binge on all those foods. The reason: When you binge on food it causes your liver to swell. Im assuming you are probably going to have a laparoscopic (sp) surgery, and its really really important that your liver is as close to normal size as possible. If it swells, then you may have to have an open RNY because the swollen liver may bend the doctors instuments. I had my surgery 3 days after Thanksgiving. My doctor warned me several times to eat child sized portions and to stay away from high fat foods that would make my liver swell. The morning before my surgery he asked again. Its really really important, sweetie.
After surgery, your doc should give you a nutrition program to follow but for the most part once you get home you will be able to have protein shakes, broth, sugar free popsicles, and brothy soups without chunks...noodles and veggies will be off limits for awhile. After a couple of weeks you can graduate to pureed foods - and certain veggies are allowed as long as they are pureed. chicken is allowed for me now but im having a hard time digesting it even if I chew like crazy so Im gonna wait another week. Stick to whatever program your doctor wants you to follow.
Hope to see you around on here!

It was liquids the first 2 weeks then it went to soft foods. I had lots of creamed soups( if there were chunks I had to puree it), broth, apple sauce, and of course Protein shakes. Bythe end of the 2 weeks I was chomping at the bit to chew. Pun intended. lol.
You should be on a presurgery diet now. Some people are put on liquids and some are just certain foods. I would say it was the hardest part before the surgery. But we all survived it.
Good luck on your surgery and take it easy afterwards. Remember sip, sip, sip. And walk, walk, walk.

| Thanks!
I wasn't told about my liver swelling and eating small portions before surgery. I am so glad I was told that. I was getting ready to make a big turkey dinner for Sunday night with all the trimmings! So I guess I will make it Friday and not eat very much that way it will give me 3 days before surgery to eat less and then Tuesday I will have the operation. Thanks you!!

Many doctors have different requirements for pre-surgery eating. Mine did not have me go on any special diet beyond the requirement to lose a certain amount of weight before the surgery. However, I do agree with what everyone has said about having your liver be as small as possible. Good luck to you and welcome.

Welcome to the board, thank you for joining us.
Congratulations on your date.
(((((HUGS))))) May your journey go well.
You WILL be able to eat most food post op. Only in moderation. Don't binge pre op. There are surgeons who will postpone surgeries if their patients gain weight pre op, because pre op weight gain raises surgery risks, not just enlarge your liver. Also, you will have a hard time adjusting and winding your mind around the post op diet, if you let yourself go on the "Last Supper Syndrome". Try to stick to a sensible, well balanced, portion controlled meals until your surgery.
Good luck.

Thanks! I am a nervous reck!! I'm not over eating just excited and scared at the same time. I think for Sunday and Monday I will drink some protein and eat very light meals but I have been eating regular meals but a little smaller portions since I read about the liver.

Everything went ok. The most pain was when they pulled the drain out. I am not very hungry and I have to make myself drink the protein. I am tired alot and very sore around the sight where they pulled the drain out.

Im glad to hear everything went well. You are going to be tired...actually, full on exhausted for a few weeks...and its normal. Im a few days away from being one month out and my left incision site is still really sore, so expect the tenderness for awhile. Get as much rest as possible, sip as much water as possible and try to get in your protein drink. (((HUGS)))
