I didn't know where to post this so it may be in the wrong category but anyway..............I have been approved and my surgery is scheduled for 8/13. I have a problem that I have had for several years. I get up in the night and eat. Sometimes I'm awake enough to remember and sometimes I'm not and I wake up the next morning with an empy bag of animal crackers and empty glass of milk next to the bed. This has been my main problem with dieting. I can do good all day long and then when I go to bed I blow it. It's really flustrating. I have stopped buying sweets but it's really not fair to my kids to not be able to enjoy an occasional treat because their mom can't control herself in the middle of the night. My question is, will this stop once I have surgery? I realize that if I do this after surgery then it will make me extremely sick. Does anyone else out there have this problem?

Hi there. What I would do and what your gonna be advised to do is tell your Dr. There is a name for this but I dont konw exactly how to spell it or say it or even look it up. Use a seach engine on your computer and put in night eating. Now back to the Dr. Part. They need to know this. There is medications you can take to stop it. Advise your PCP of this as soon as you can so you can get started on a plan to help you stop doing it. I hope this helped. |

Yep. I agree with Ms. Vickie. Your doctor needs to know. Also if you have a psych eval you need to let them know also. Let everyone involved know. I'm sure Doc will be in shortly with all the right terminology etc. |

Are you by any chance taking one of the sleep meds? Those are side effects of those. -bree

I can tell you I had the same problem pre-op. I didn't really do it at all during my liquid diet. And I haven't done it since surgery. I never even thought to tell my Dr. and there's no way I personally would have told the pysc (for fear of NOT passing the eval). But, I don't wake up anymore. I think once you take yourself off of sugar and soda and such, it kind of throws your body crazy and what we once did, we don't do anymore. Now, I'm not saying this problem won't start back up later down the road, but it hasn't been a problem for me yet. But, I'm only a month out.

I am currently on zoloft. Some of the research I've done on the internet tells me that it causes it and other says it prevents it. Either way, I have told my primary doctor about it and he has just told me to try to stop myself before I eat. Yeah I know, a lot of help. I am thinking about changing docs anyway just because my doc now doesn't seem to be very proactive. I also didn't make a big deal of it during my psych eval for fear of not being approved. I am one of these that downplays my problems so they don't seem like a big deal.

I never got up in the middle of the night to eat, but I would eat when I got home from work so I would have a full belly to go to sleep with. I did that every night. Very much a comfort for me to go to bed not hungry. Working pm shift, I am darn hungry when I get home from work, and to be totally honest here, for me that feeling has yet to go away. I have to fight this on a daily basis. Yes, sometimes I fail. I feel horrible after I do it as well. Not more than 10 minutes ago, I went to the fridge, and was going to eat some leftover chicken. I fought the urge and put it back. Then, I went to the pantry, and found some awful good lookin cereal. I actually took it out, got a bowl, and was going to pour it. I was strong. mike |

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | ....THAT is intense! I'll be the first to confess - I am a "night eater" - the only difference is I'm aware and responsible...I try to eat responsibly as well...eating fruit...or something else healthy. So...just so you know, it's NOT impossible to lose when you are a 'night eater'....AND I've been pretty successful in my weight loss journey. FYI - I did have a good friend in college that we had to put a little 'lock' on the pantry b/c she did the same thing...btw she only locked it at night. (just a thought....)

Heck, I never thought of that. I do get those out of control days as well. I wish I had a lock on the pantry and fridge door. Locking them up would be intense, but if it works, GO FOR IT! mike |

Sleep walking in medical terms is somnamblism. It's mostly associated with just walking, but you can do a number of things such as eating. It happens during a certain stage of sleep, and is considered a kind of sleeping disorder. Have you been taking Zoloft long before this started? Or did you start noticing this after you were put on Zoloft? If it's the latter, it is likely that Zoloft is the culprit, and changing the med may solve the problem. If it's the former, it may be one of the long term unwanted effects of Zoloft or it may be something else. In any case, if you want good answers and a good solution to the problem, ask your PCP or surgeon to refer you to a sleep splecialist (these drs are ususally psychiatrist.)
