Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | So, today I went to work-I was feeling fine, rather good. An hour later, I'm sitting at my desk and I start feeling these intense, sharp pains running up my back and on my sides. The pain was so bad that my eyes were getting fuzzy and i felt like i couldn't catch my breath. I freak out-burst in to tears thinking-this is it, i'm back in the hospital-hernia or gall bladder, something because of my surgery. I call my surgeons-office not open yet. I call my pcp-she's with a patient. Finally, the surgeons office opens and they tell me to come in right away. I went, and they pressed on my stomach, on my back-checked the blood work that I had done last Friday. My blood work was actually perfect-everything was at the appropriate level-no defficiencies in anything. They told me that they thought I had maybe just pulled something in my back, but could be early signs of gall bladder or hernia issue. They asked me to stay out of work for the day and if the pain changes go to the ER. I went home, took a nap and some tylenol. I feel okay, my shoulders are a bit tight-but no where near the pain i felt this am. Did i overreact? I'm mortified! I cried in front of my co-workers/boss, had my pcp worried sick-she called me 3 times at home today. (shes also had gastric bypass) Ugh, how do you tell the difference between normal issues (like a back ache) or if it is an issue related to gastric bypass surgery?

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | (((HUG))) the thing is you dont know. AND you have to be tested to be sure. WHEN i was about 4 months out i had pains in my lower back that were to intense....... and wouldnt ease up..........my surgeon wanted me to go to the ER as soon as i could ( i had to clear up my work) he was there when i arrived ordered all my tests, blood work, gall bladder songogram, cat scan....all tests were done.......and the end result was a OVARIAN cyst ...which ruptured while there waiting results and i passed the biggest clot mess and was feeling better. SO we dont know and have to be sure anytime something happens. JUSt to be sure. GLad it wasnt anything.....

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | hmmm. i can honestly say i have had pains and twitches and real querky things happen to me since the surgery. and quite honestly i too think blame it all on my bypass lol! I dont have a clue if thats really true though. dont ever think you are overreacting. and dont ever NOT tell anyone (drs) they need to know EVERYTHING as it happends. way better for them to stay ontop of anything that might blow up into something else. (not trying to scare you at all) feel better, and if you find out what it was let us know. |

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Sounds like a gallbladder attack to me. I had two really bad ones and it scared the life out of me. Maybe your dr should order a sonagram to see if you have any visable stones.

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Thanks for everyones kind words and insight.... Spikey, since you've dealt with this issue, what am I looking for? My doctor basically told me that they didn't think it was necessary to do anything further, unless the pain continues or changes. Right now, I'm not in any pain-my shoulders and lower back are just a bit achy. Do i wait and see if this happens again? Thanks for everyones help! I really, really appreciate it.

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | JessicA i had my gallbladder out at 25. It sounds symptomatic to me of a gallbladder attack. All I can tell you is my symptoms.. Pain in right side right under the rib It moved to my back and up. Y0ou may not have another for a long time. Then again you might. It gets worse with each one or it did me. I agree with Spikey in telling you to have them do a Sonagram aka ultrasound on your gallbladder. With rapid weight loss it can cause it for sure. That is what sparked mine up. My son had his at age 11 !!!!!!!! His was sludge. He had phantom pains. His hurt him like 3 times in the left side and the last one ....on the right were the gall bladder is. Honey if you take even one bite of spicy food or even a tad of it it can set it off if that is what it is. Have your PCP order it. Since she was so concered about it im sure she will. I hope you feel better ! |

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Both times what set mine off was eggs and mayo. First time was egg salad, second time was deviled eggs. The second one was so bad I thought I was having a heart attack. My pains were weird. Across my back and then my left elbow. My doctor sent me for the ultrasound and I didn't have stones. She then sent me for a stress test because she thought it sounded like heart symptoms. Well the dye test came back with a circulation problem on the front part of my heart so I was sent to a cardiologist. He said it didn't sound like heart to him but since I had a history of heart disease in my family he would feel better with an angiogram. I had the angiogram and everything was fine. My doctor finally sent me in for the dye test on the gallbladder (Hydascope) and it came back that my gallbladder was only functioning at 20%. Most of my friends that had it were under 10% so my surgeon said he could operate or I could wait until it got worse. I opted for the surgery and he told me that it was the right decision. The pathology report on my gallbladder came back and it was packed with tiny little developing stones that would have grown and cause me more attacks. I would ask your doctor to send you for an ultrasound and then go from there. Gallbladder attacks are not fun and one of the side effects of WLS is gallbladder disease. Mine happened 2 years before I decided to have my WLS surgery. When I went in for my consult with my surgeon he asked me why I didn't have the WLS then, he could have done both at the same time. I told him I had been thinking about it for 5 years and at that time I was hurting and just wanted the gall bladder out. He said it was just as well it gave him two years to practice on other people. Gotta love him!!!

| Super Moderator | Jessica, there's no overreacting when it comes to bypass post ops. Any intense pain should be checked out. As others say, I think you should have GB sonogram, if only to rule out stones. Another stone that will cause you a lot of pain are urinary stones. If your pee looks darker in color than usual, then that's another thing to be checked out. In any case, even if your surgeon says not now, insist, or, ask your PCP to set up an exam.

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Today, I had an appointment with my pcp and a follow-up with my surgeon. My pcp told me that their was "no doubt in her mind that this was a gall bladder issue." I went to my surgeons office, and actually met with my surgeon this time, not his nurse. (first time i have seen him since surgery 4/24-weird, huh?) After I explained the symptons, he immediately agreed that it sounded like a gall bladder issue. So, I have an ultrasound next Tuesday. I'm so bummed, and kind of nervous. I went in to this knowing that most likely I would have an issue with my gall bladder-I just didn't know it would be 3 months after my surgery. I told my mom, who burst in to tears. She is convinced that I am going to have health problems the rest of my life. I REALLY hate the hospital, and can't imagine staying even another night there. I'm starting to feel a bit selfish about the surgery that I had. I am all that my mom has, and I feel like I am going to give her a nervous break down....
