I had the titiation. I woke up this am feeling much better. They stated they had to take me up to a 13. Those of you with a C-pap know that number. They came in several times hooking my right leg back up and then setting the machine up. They stated I got 3 hours of sleep with no apena after they got it up to a 13. I do feel better. My mind is not foggy today what so ever. If any of you are ever advised a sleep study or....think you need one.... do it. Thanks yall for listening. |

I'd say, do it even if you don't think you need it, a lot of people have it without realizing, and weight issues are one of the most common causes of this. As a matter of fact, if insurance denies you on the grounds that you don't have any medical issues, if you've never had a sleep study done, or had it done years ago, then do it, and the result may be just that thing you need to get an approval.

I went for my sleep test last night. I wonder when I will get my results? I 'thought' I wasn't sleeping at all. Why am I so conscious of my thoughts and behaviors during sleeping? I always assume I am awake, but the technician last night told me I was sleeping. Doc, do you have an explanation? I just keep praying I don't have sleep apnea. He said he couldn't tell me anything, I had to wait until the doctor scores my results and then I will find out the results. Am I just weird about thinking I'm awake, but I'm actually asleep? |

funny you mentioned sleep study i recieved a card in the mail the other day stating that i need to call and make an appointment for them to come out and set me up with a cpap machine and you talk about no clue what so ever i thought that i was sleeping just fine . I've always been a light sleeper but i thought that was just me so i guess that i'll just look at it as a positive right now to qualify for the surgery.

I agree. If my results come back that I have sleep apnea, I will do my best to use the cpap as they require. Did you have a sleep study before, and that is why they sent you the correspondence? I just want to get on the road to being an official 'loser.' That sleep study was so annoying. I couldn't get comfortable in that stupid hospital bed. I think personally, they should use real mattresses. I think I would have fallen asleep faster and stayed asleep all night. Ugghhhhh I came home at 6:30 this morning and went back to bed until 11. |

I hadn't even thought about the actual post-surgery part and CPAP when I first realized that sleep apnea was one of the comorbidities my insurance would cover WLS for. I just wanted to get the sleep study because I was sure I have it so it would get me covered (my son used to say I snored and stopped breathing). I never really took it serious though, sleep apnea seemed like the disease flavor of the month. I was even afraid to tell them at the initial sleep clinic visit that I wanted the sleep study so I could have surgery. I don't know why. I guess I thought they wouldn't want to do the study then, or would say I didn't have it so I could be covered, or would be mean to me or something. It doesn't even make any sense right now, but I know then I didn't want to mention it. However, I did and they said it was a REALLY good thing because the anesthesiologist would most definitely want to know if I had it and it would be so much better to have it treated for some time prior to surgery - and to be sure that I had it with me after surgery. These guys really scared me about how important it is and how bad sleep apnea can be - of course, it IS what they do, but I am really glad now that I told them. |

Scared? lol I know what you mean. My tech last night talked my ears off for over and hour while he was prepping me, about the dangers of sleep apnea and about some of the people he has seen come into the various sleep centers he has worked for. The symptoms he was explaining last night, I don't have. My symptoms are more identical to those of anemia. But I'm just glad the stupid test is over. Now I just hope my test is looked at early next week so my surgeon can get the results and we can get my information sent to insurance for approval and get a surgery date. I went to my primary a few weeks back and I weighed 313. About a week and a half later I meet with my surgeon (this past Monday) and I weighed in at 309...so I lost 4 lbs since my primary put me on a mini diet just so it's documented in my file (just in case my insurance company acts up). Then I stepped on my scale today and it says I weigh 302. I don't know if it's accurate, but if it is I've lost 7 lbs this week, eating healthy (lots of fruit, fat free Lactaid, cornflakes for breakfast, reduced fat cheese sticks as snacks and Lean Cuisine meals). I actually have a weigh in on Tuesday with my primary, so we shall see if my weight loss is right since my last visit. I'm excited. I really am. |

Feeling as if "not slept at all" is one of the symptoms of sleep apnea, though there are just as many people who think they sleep well throught out the night, but in reality, have sleep apnea. Your sleep is probably very shallow, so you have lots of "dreams" and "half awake" periods which makes you feel as if you have been awake all night. That should also come up in the sleep study, if that's the case. Yes, you need to let the anesthesiologist know that you have sleep apnea and bring along your CPAP when you have surgery, as you are likely to set all the alarms off in recovery after surgery before you completely wake up, if you have sleep apnea. CraigT, the host of Renewed Reflections, told me a couple of years ago of his experience in recovery which had both me and his wife Leslie laughing until our sides hurt. He had his surgery 10 years ago, so though he had been diagnosed with sleep apnea, no one thought to tell him to bring his CPAP with him. As the result, he'd set off the alarms every 10 minutes or so in recovery, which had the nurses rushing to his side, shaking him awake and shouting, "Mr.T, Mr. T, are you okay?" to which he'd say "Huh? Yes" or something like that and sorta swipe his arms around to get the nurses away from him, fall asleep again, set off the alarms, have the nurses rushing around again...and again...and again...until he came completely around from the anesthesia.

I took my sleep machine with me. They kind of blew me off about when I checked in at the hospital for my surgery. Told me just to let my family hold on to it. I hadn't been out of surgery very long when the recovery nurses wanted my family to get it for them. I was setting off alarms and wasn't breathing well for them. So it is definetly something to take with you to the hospital so you are prepared.

This thread proves to me why I love this website!!! My surgeon's assistant asked me if I wanted to do a sleep study and of course I said NO! Who really wants to sleep away from home of course I said no. But now that is the first call I'm making Monday morning is my appointment for a sleep study. I had no clue that it could possibly help me get approved for my surgery (and sleep better)!
