It's called addiction transfer and is being noted or late by the medical community involved with bariatrics. There are actually numerous articles out, some academic, others not.
Data for the ratio of transference is reported to be anywhere from 5-30%. From what I have seen in general, not to scare you, but I think the number is closer to the higher end of this.
It doesn't mean a lot of people will go that way, but I think it pays to know that it can happen. That way, if you think something is wrong, you can get help in the earliest stages, instead of not being able to do something until it's gone pretty far.

Coping skills aren't always easy to aquire. Exercise is a good thing, it helps you change your pace, and being aware of your environment while walking, can sooth your mind, too. Or, develop a hobby, start something that you always wanted to do, but made excuses for not doing.

Another method that I think is worth looking into, is --now, this doesn't mean that you are there, but the method that's utilized there can be used in many areas-- is the 12 step program that is part of the AA program, or, look into other peer programs like OA and NA. A lot of them have similar programs which, while they are essentially thought to be for addictive behaviour, it also entails aquiring coping skills, and there are methods there that you can adapt for yourself. Whether you find something there that's a good hint for you or not, I think it's worth checking into what/how they do it, there are a lot of online sites for all the programs, as well as local chapters.

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

compulsive behavior is going to have to be looked at hard. For those who truly think that this surgery 'fixes' them by making them lose the weight..well it just doesn't work that way. There IS whether they want to admit to it or NOT an issue at hand. If you don't deal with the compulsive behavior it WILL come out in another area.

Be it sex, drugs, drinking, shopping, relationships, gambling, exercise, etc...you have to deal with the part of your personality that got you fat in the first place..

I'm really straightforward about how important preparation on the psych side is for this surgery and for many years beyond. I'm a strong supporter of counseling so that beyond the surgery we can become healthy inside AND out!

I am going to hold my hands up and admit to the addiction transfer, since my surgery I have statred gambling, on scratch cards and fruit machines, I can't seem to leave a shop until I have bought a scratch card and its usually more than just one. On average I spend about £100 a week on them which is most of my weekly money gone.

I will have to learn to control myself now I have admitted it to you all.

bev, it's best to get professional help for things like these.
I keep on putting out the heads up on this problem, because I would like for everyone to be aware that, as with a lot of other things, it is, "one day, it may be me," and be ready and quick about getting professional help before the going gets too bad.
(((((((HUGS)))))) I am keeping you in my thoughts that this be solved in a good way for you.

Hey its takes alot to admit stuff. Like Kenya says, your amung friends on here and if we can be there to support you we will be.
im sure there are others out there. I heard its very common for people to have this additction transfer since we have lost our best friend. food. So we change it to something else.

The good thing about admitting is that it actually takes a load off your mind and heart.
If you are in denial that you have a bad habit, or if you know you have a bad habit going on, but want to hide it from others, you will try to make ends meet, so to speak, and trip over yourself all over the place, or feel guilt ridden every time you vow to yourself, never again, then find that you have no power over the pull. This kind of heartache just isn't worth it, and you don't deserve it, you are too precious for that. Admitting is the first step of recovery.

Hi ! I am new here, can't seem to figure out how to start my own question, but here goes an answer to yours. For me it's clothes and SHOES, I have to smuggle them in the house now, for me it's because i can get really cute shoes when i was so large i had alot of ugly shoes. Also i think you get a "high" just shopping! Jilarie1
