Not too long ago I was reading a magazine article about a new "phenomenon" regarding people who have had gastric by pass. It said that people who had the surgery are experiencing other forms of addictions. There was a lady on their that developed a shopping addiction, one that became an alcoholic and one more that I can't think of. I thought this was a bit bizarre and was curious if anyone has read this article or heard of this. I know my shopping habits have gotten pretty bad but that's only because I have no clothes to fit my new body so I HAD to buy some. Any thoughts? I think the magazine was in a Cosmo or glamour.. those are the only 2 magazines I get. Anywho, was just curious as usual.

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

yes. well compulsive eating should be viewed as an addiction and managed accordingly. we all ate for a reason. and when those reasons resurface...who knows. i've been trying to get in to see a shrink for months to head it off. needless to say my mental health benefits ARE NOT as good as my medical benefits....(dont get me started)

I just thought it was a tad weird, but understandable.. especially the idea of trading an addiction for another. Like when people in rehab have to stop the drugs and then start chain smoking. Amazing how our bodies and mind work sometimes.

I agree.. people eat for LOTS of different reasons. I know I did. I had an addiction to food that I never understood til I went to the therapist before surgery. I am sorta a compulsive person so I really have to watch my habits and keep tabs on them. Thats why I try to stick to exactly what the dietician tells me to eat because I just know the first food that i'm not supposed to have, IF it agrees to me it will end up being a go to food and I could start back to old habits.

I had to do the same thing Kenya. I had to be tobacco free for at least 3 months before they would even start my paper work for the surgery. That part was the hardest.

i guess the whole point of all of this is to learn better ways to cope. before, those of us who were emotional eater, used to stuff our feelings, and now that we cant, we either find a better way to deal (prefered method) or become compulsive in another area. i dont want to be that way but i am seeing it and its scaring me. no i dont do drugs or drink or anything like that, but i am just scared to death that i am going to take up something so ridiculous. i mean what exactly does 'coping' mean anyway. like when you get mad, what do you do instead of eating until you puke?? any thoughts?? lol.
