| Newbie | I would like to know how many of you had excess skin after bypass surgery? How bad was the skin hanging? I am a 31 year old African American female. I would like to continue to date and am afraid to do the bypass surgery because I have heard that people look just as terrible after the weight loss due in part to the excess skin hanging everywhere. I wanna know: How many of you have had excess skin after the surgery? Where were the worst excess skin areas? Did anything other than plastic surgery help "tone" the skin? How much scarring takes place after the plastic surgery? Thanks everyone Aurorae |

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | ok. this is going to be hard to answer. it depends on genetics, the rate at which you lose the weight, if you have been heavy for long, and what you do while losing the weight. I've lost 40 lbs so far, and am flabby under the arms and now in the upper thigh areas. My friend lost 125 lbs with her bypass and has NO SIGNS of loose skin. the scarring depends on how and where the cuts are made i assume. then ontop of that, we (afro americans) tend to keyloid (sp)....a whole nother topic in and of itself I personally dont intend to have surgery for the skin no matter what the outcome. My goal is to lose 108 lbs. i dont think it will literally hang but i'll be able to tell you in another 6 months or so hopefully I'm sorry if this doesnt answer your questions completely. I think a lot of it depends on the inidividual. Hope that helps some. |

| Newbie | Hi Kenya. Thank you for replying. You look really great and you don't seem to have excess skin in your pictures. I am worried, since I am not married yet and still dating, whether the Bypass surgery is a good idea for me. I weigh 350 approximately. I am 31 years old. I do have body issues and my stomach already sags in a nasty way. I am wondering if it will stay that way after the Bypass |

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Thank you. It's not too bad. Who knows if it ever will be? I dont think about that. I had some health issues before surgery and they seem to have gotten better so thats what counts. Awwww dont let the skin deter you. decide on the surgery if its what you want to do to change to a healthy lifestyle. i wanna date too!!! lol! I am sure there are plenty of people at the same start weight as you who have done bypass and have not had skin removed. It may not be that drastic. More importantly really think about the reason why you would want the surgery and make sure that its right for you. Also I didnt officially welcome you to the board so: WELCOME!!!!! you will find A LOT of information here in these posts. good luck and if you have any other questions ask away! |

| Super Moderator | Welcome to the board, thank you for joining us. How much and how bad excess skin will be, is going to depend on the factors Kenyar said, plus on how well toned you are pre-op. Obviously, the better you are toned, the less the issue is going to be. That said, as Kenyar says, you need to think through why you are contemplating this surgery. If it is just for looks, I am going to have to say, you will be disappointed with the results, however medically successful it may declared to be. The surgeons do this to improve your health and quality of life related to your health. The task you will be put to after the surgery itself is done, is entirely up to you, and unless you do what you need to, you'll have a rough time. If you are doing this for health in earnest, then, when you go through the threads and posts here, you will see that everyone values their resulting improvement in their health and quality of life over the skin issue--the skin issue is secondary to regaining health, and even if you do get plastics in the end, it has to be done at least a year and a half to two years after your WLS surgery, at least 6 months of maintaining goal weight. Think over your priorities in life. Do you have children that you want to stay around for, for a long time? Do you want to be healthy, to be able to go about life without worrying about a lot of things you worry about now? If you are in a relationship, think over what you are seeking in the relatioship, and what your partner is seeking in you, because, to be honest, not to scare you, but relationship issues sometimes arise as a result of large weightloss, and this not from the skin issue, but from the improvement in your self esteem and on your outlook on life. That's the best advice I can give you. If it is to improve your health and quality of life, the surgery is probably your best bet. If you are looking for things other than that, you'll have to consider them a bonus and rethink and realign your priorities. If you already have a date, then congratulations. Be honest with yourself, your roller coaster emotions you are having at this moment are quite normal, so don't stress out too much. ((((((((HUGS)))))))) May your journey go well.

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | you've got to make the decision based on your HEALTH hon..and the other bit..it's hard to predict. I'm 45 yrs old and I had the WLS 5 yrs ago at age 40..I've had 3 children (1 girl 2 boys) and you can look at my pics on here and at my website for pre/during/after/long term at: Yahoo! Photos in the babygirl album & the newest ones in the 'newest album. ---NO PLASTIC SURGERY HERE----I've lost 200 at my lowest weight.. --you can get caught up in the worries about how you will look etc...I thought I for sure would need ps and even went for a consult at 14? mos post and was told I didn't need any...go figure. Hey I ain't perfect for sure ...not at all that is NOT what I am saying at all..but even naked I've had men say they would never have guessed that I had the surgery so I guess that's about as good as it gets, you know? For me the plan was to work hard to get muscle that 'if' i had to have plastic surgery I'd have a great result with it, not just depend on the plastics to do the work for me. Believe me the results I got I worked darn hard for ---bree

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | I was 310lb at my pre-op weight I was 287lbs. I am 5'2 so I was a bit of a rollie pollie (LOL). I do now have alot of sagging all over my arms are the worst for me. I don't wear any tank tops at all, my shirts are all quarter sleeves. That's what make me comfortable for now. My legs, butt, my breast (I went form a D cup to a full B) and stomach also have sagging but these areas are easier to conceal with the type of clothes I wear. Most people just looking at me don't know that my skin is so bad. My boyfriend does not mind, he is very supportive of me. I was single when I went through with my sugery. I met my boyfriend about 6 months post op. I guess I fell lucky to have found him he is helping me pay for my body lift.

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | exactly friendly..when we look great day to day isn't that what really counts? I've heard soooo many go on and on about this ps or that ps...and oh my..it's just insane. I actually got banned from a chat for saying.."are you wanting to get a job as a stripper post op or what, cause that's the only job I know that you gotta look perfect naked" you know what I'm saying? ps is a great thing! but wow some do get 'addicted' to it..it's like the food issues get replaced with something else. If I can just get this taken off or this or that or..oh my... ALL of you ladies are gorgeous!!! and you look great! Don't sweat the small stuff...like I always say..I'd rather be alive that have plastic surgery and my immune system go wanko again and end up in a wheelchair again..no bloody way! I'll take my imperfections thank you! ---Bree
