| Plastic Surgery & Insurance
Hi there!
A couple of weeks ago, I went for a plastic surgery consult. All very positive. He wants to do a lower body lift, arms, boobs. The entire thing will cost approx. $37,000. He is a specialist for bariatric patients. I asked about insurance and he said he has never gotten insurance to cover the proceedures! He had a woman with a 26 lb "apron" and all the issues relating to it, and couldn't get ins. to cover! I have Vista, they covered my surgery 100%, even the co-pays! Now $37,000 is not in my budget, it's like buying a car!!!!!
Any thoughts?

That's like 2 1/2 cars for me!!!!!!! Who can afford that??? Obviously enough people to keep him in business, but it seems extreme that no one gets ins approval.

Call your insurance company and see what the coverage is. Ask them to provide you with the requirements for it to be covered. See if you can follow those. Even if part of it is covered, the hospital stay will be because it is too hard to separate the charges per procedure most of the time. Take pictures if you have any skin irritation from the skin and document clearly any pain or problems that skin might be causing.

I personally am against the body lift because of this...it MIGHT be less expensive if they do a leg lift and tummy tuck SEPARATELY, versus the lift. Something to check into....I will probably wind up breaking mine up into several surgeries, due to the cost issue....I rescheduled my consult for June 7th, so I'll let you know what I find out then!

OMG. You would think they would make it more affordable or that ins. would cover it because it is for health issues. I would call your insurance company to see if they would cover it for ant reason or at least some.

I will tell you alot of plastic people dont like to even file for the insurance to try to pay. Its a long process. They would have to get approval before doing so and then only get paid back just a small percentage of what they billed. The lady with the apron weighing that much truly needed it done and the insurance should have paid. I will say that what they are probally looking for in skin removal especially from the tummy area is a hernia or tumor to say ok we will pay for it only because these other problems are here.
I know the skin looks so ugly to us.......and surely its not pretty but......we have our health to be so grateful for after the initial surgery. If anyone wants it done go for it ! If you can afford it go for it!
If you still have questions call your insurance and see if they have any provisions what so ever to at least get the tummy skin if that is irritating you. I know of no other insurance company that will do any other skin removal other than the tummy. BTW the price the man quoted you honey is just for his service......its not including the hosptial im sure. Good luck with all this.

I called the insurance company, they DO NOT cover it.....
As for the Dr. The total was for the hospital and the ansthesiologist (sp?) and his fees... not bad I thought....
There is a rumor that a particular university in my area that has a burn unit will do a tummy tuck for by-pass patients free because you donate your skin to the unit. I asked my Dr. (not plastic surgeon, but bariatric) and he said it was true...
So I am now off to research that...
But I know I am going to have to be comfortable in my skin for awhile!
DH and I were joking and we said I looked like one of those water tubes that the kids play with hahahahaha
Even with all my saggy skin, I am wearing a size 12!!!!! And that's from a 34!!!!!!

Wow--the surgery would be free if you donate the skin to the burn center? What a great thing--you feel better and you help someone along the way. Two great reasons to look into it.
