| Plastic Surgeon interested in helping weight loss patients
Hello everybody,
I found this forum while looking for weight loss support groups that serve the Triangle area of North Carolina. I am a Plastic Surgeon trained at USC in Los Angeles where I worked with a renowned post-bariatric surgeon, Susan Downey. She imparted on me an interest in helping folks who have lost a lot of weight. Actually, my interest in bariatric surgery goes even further back to when I trained in General Surgery with the likes of Bill O'Malley, a very prolific laparoscopic GBP surgeon in Rochester, NY. Anyway, I can't give individualized medical advice, but I'm happy to answer general questions, including options for post-op patients thinking about Plastic Surgery. Sorry to be so long-winded. I'm really excited to help and look forward to participating in the Plastic Surgery forum!
With warm regards... |

HI... I had my GBP at Highland but not with O'Malley, I had mine with Dr. Johnson, Chief of Surgery at Highland. They now have a PS working with them on life after Weight Loss, not necessarily surgical patients but most are. He's spoken several times at our support groups and is trying to incorporate a lifestyle change as well as plastic surgery. It's going to be a great program and I think they're looking to get it up and running in January. There'll be cooking classes, excercise classes, support groups on different levels.. any money put toward these lifestyle changes will go into a "virtual" bank account and will be applied to the cost of future plastic surgery. You should check it out if you've not heard of it.
It's a good thing that you're doing and I'm excited to see more Dr's becoming informed and interested in this area.

Imlosinit,
I'm guessing that the Plastic Surgeon is Jeff Gusenoff. He's a great guy and trained at the University of Rochester (I was finishing General Surgery while he was finishing Plastics) about the same time I did. I wish I could say I miss Rochester (my wife and I are from there and my son was born at Highland), but the winters are a lot milder here in North Carolina. Joe Johnson, who did your surgery, is also a phenomenal guy. Please give him my regards if you see him anytime soon!
Regards,
ER

Well you should be glad your not in upstate NY right now. Yesterday am there was no snow at my house and my the drive home it was awful and we got over a foot of snow. I like snow but I like the pretty snow.
I had Dr. Omalley as my surgeon just about 2 years ago and I am currently a patient of Dr. Gusenoffs also.
Both are excellent surgoens. Small world that you worked and trained with both of them.

I would love to see plastic surgeon's investigate the sheer numbers of people having this surgery and make it more affordable for us...being as how insurance will not help.
My plastics are put off until I can put together the money to make it happen. It's VERY hard to make this much progress, only to be put on hold, as it is seen as cosmetic....I would love for insurance companies to understand...we did this for our health, and paying for plastics is a short term loss that will DOUBLE what they would have had to pay for our obese co-morbidities....

Welcome to the board, thank you for joining us.
I have moved this thread from where it was originally posted, because I think it will get more attention here. I have stuck it for the time being, too, as there are a lot of discussions on PS, and with many of our members considering PS now, I hope we'll get some lively discussions and good pointers and input.

Hi and welcome Tks so much for your interest in this topic. Getting the skin off would, in my opinion, be the finish to this journey but it is not "included". I live near Buffalo and had my surg. with Dr. Carraunna very very pleased with him and his staff as well. Again, welcome and Happy Holidays! AS FOR SNOW OMG we cant see our street from the window as we speek, lol. Thats Buffalo winters for ya! kathy
