When my mother died, they were able to harvest her corneas, liver and skin. The donation center told me later that good skin is in high demand for burn patients.
I also got a very nice "thank you" note from the liver recipient. The donation literally saved his life. He and his family were extremely grateful that we had agreed with Mom's wishes to be a donor. (Signing the card isn't enough. You have to let those around you know your wishes so that when they call to verify the donor's intent, you can do it.)
PS after WLS is a rare opportunity to make a life-changing organ donation without having to die first.
Thanks, Bob, for bringing this up!!

Gosh. I had never even had that thought cross my mind! hell. I have stated I want to donate anything useable when I die. My lungs are out of the question though.
I cant afford to have PS, but I will ask if it ever comes up in the future. And I will make it clear to family.
Good thread Bob. Its horrid that you are all having to go through this. I really feel for you all.
Stay strong, and *hugs* to you and yours.

I've seen numerous posts about skin donation on other WLS websites. The general consensus is that very few places do this. Our skin is normally too stretched out to be useable. Also, it's just the first layer of skin that is needed, not any of the underlying fat or tissues. Skin from cadavers is what is normally used.
I did find a link to one site that does accept live donors however. Musculoskeletal Transplant Foundation
There is a form you fill out and someone is supposed to contact you to let you know if you are eligible to donate.

We had a discussion about this a couple years ago on here. Some did call and ask about this and all of them did hit a road block. I dont know why but it had alot to do with the type of skin I think. Im not sure. You have to think its going to have to be at a hosptial that treats burn patients I would think. I dont know. I know the cost of the surgery wouldnt and shouldnt be passed on to the patient who needs it to live. It would be a great blessing to someone that needs it yes. I just dont remember why all of these people were turned down.

As far as there being differnt type of skin this is true, You have regular skin and then whats called Blush skin. Blush skin is exactly what it sounds like, It runs in front from your upper chest to over the head and back of the neck. When you blush your skin gets red and regular skin doesn't. As far as thickness of skin I'm not a dr. or a medical trained person but just a father. When my daugher has surgeries to her neck and face they implant an expander under her good skin, Then weekly she goes and they fill the expander ( like a small balloon ) with saline to stretch the skin. this takes several months there are times when she can have almost as much as a large I V bag added to the balloon. after the skin is streched back to surgerie the fluid is drained the expander removed and the skin is moved as far as they can get it. When she first had her accident it will be 4 years on Feb. 18 Her birthday she had many grafs including the use of pig skin till they can harvest enough real skin. The pig skin is only temoarary it has to be replaced. They have had very good success with artificial skin but like everything else it's extremely expensive and insurance fights it sometimes. I have talked with my daughters PS on many occasions being she has has 35 surgeries to date and looking at atleast 15 more. The only problem with artificial id it doesn't blush and that is very noticable. Her P.S. just happens to be the Dr. that does the plastics for my Bariatric Group and we talked about my excess skin and he said great there is a place in Boston they send it to. They can actually take a 1 inch square and make it a 4 inch square. So I'm not sure about the thickness isue. Please ask your PS. Thank You, Bob

There have been *rumors* about this on and off on this board, and in other places.
A lot of people on this board have asked their local hospitals, and have found out that it is just that--ruomor--and they don't accept such donations.
It isn't that nobody wants to do something good, it's that they have tried to, but found out that they can't.
If you do know of a specific center/centers, please list those places, and also be certain about the source of where you get the information, so people can contact those places and not be turned away when they have good intent.
There are too many of this type of information that are often misleading, especially on the internet. What was intended as specific and local information often gets genralised and vague with a lot of misinformation attached to it, to boot.

Bob, I don't think Doc is coming down on you. She's just asking all who posted on this thread (and there were quite a few contradictory replies - yes you can, no they won't, etc.) to be sure of their facts before they passed on a misinterpretation. They didn't take all of my mother's skin, just about 20 square inches on the top of her thighs. The rest didn't make the grade. You can't blame them for being picky.
No need to delete your thread, brother. It's just that everyone has to speak from knowledge when they reply to something like this.
Your original post was prompted by the love of a caring father. There's no power stronger than that!

Here is a link to the actual brochure on living donation. http://www.mtf.org/pdf/MTF_Skin_Donation_Bro.pdf
This is the only one I have been able to find that seems to accept donations from WLS patients, but it at least looks to be legit, and would be a wonderful gift.
I am so sorry for all of the pain that your daughter has had to endure. As a paramedic, severe burns are some of the worst calls I have been to. I can't imagine going through that extreme amount of pain and suffering.
