Default Plastics Consultation Today

I am both very nervous and excited. Today I am meeting with a plastic surgeon for a consultation. This Dr is highly recommended by my surgeon who did my RNY surgery, and he specializes in body conturing/major weight loss areas. I called my insurance company and got the specifications to see what they might cover, and was told that as long as things were deemed "medically necessary" it would cover a panni, possibly a brachioplasty, and breast reduction. I am going to go for the consultation and see what the dr says. If my insurance will approve and cover anything, thats great, if not, well, thats ok too. My RNY surgeon is pleased with my results, and was the one who mentioned it to me, and I am happy with my results too. I would like to see 150 but if I dont, then I'm not going to get upset about it. My biggest problem areas are my stomach, it gets in the way when I exercise, and Ive started running, trying to get ready for a fall marathon- the swaying tummy is really aggrevating, let me tell ya, plus all the nasty sweating and itching. My "girls" could use some work-they look like tube socks with tennis balls at the end, and of course I do have the bat wings going. Financially I cannot afford to pay for this right now, so I'm at the mercy of the insurance company. I'm really nervous about standing almost naked in front of someone I dont even know. My boyfriend has yet to see me completley naked since I've lost 140 lbs. I heard that they may take pictures to submit to the insurance company! I really feel sorry for the person who has to see mine!! I will keep everyone updated on the progress. Wish me luck!!

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Please keep posting and tell us how it goes. I want my arms done so badly.
And, let me know what the insurance says... mine told me when I was approved,
"loose skin" would not be removed at their expense. I think they would do a panni removal. But right now, it is my arms that creep me out.
Let me know how it goes.

Please let us know what the doctor recommended for you. I'm interested to learn, because I've read about the pros of waiting a year after your weight is settled before having plastics. And I'm interested in learning about the insurance end, too!

I hope it went well!

The consultation went very well, although it was a little humiliating. Having to stand completely naked in front of someone while they take photos of your biggest flaws was not my most favorite thing to do, but I survived. The surgeon said he would document everything and send his notes along with the photos to the insurance company. He said that it could take up to a month to hear back, whether they approved or denied my claim. I am really hoping that they will approve me and that I MIGHT be able to have the surgery this year-I've already met my insurance deductible. I guess that would be in a perfect world. I have decided to just sit back and let things happen. If it is meant to be, then it will happen. I guess on a good note- my stomach had a terrible rash where the pannis hangs down, and that was documented and photographed, I guess that can only help my case, but it sure does hurt. I have some steroid cream that I've been using. I will keep everyone updated on my progress.

The rash will work big in your favor. Especially if it keeps coming back. Some insurance companies will deny at first but if you keep going to the doctor for rashes eventually they will cover the operation. Keep us posted on how it's going.

My doctor said I needed to document my panni rash 3 times with him, then it is approved. The anti fungal cream has worked well.. I guess the rash would go away forever if I use the cream all the time (til I die?!) That is the only thing covered by my plan.
Anyway, are you doing your arms? What is he charging for them?
Thanks.

My insurance company said they will approve the brachioplasty if it is medically necessary- I also had a rash underneath my arms, which was documented with photos- I get this rash because I run, nearly 5 miles every day, and its from my arms rubbing my clothes. I've tried every mositure wicking garment out there, even spent over $100 on Under Armor, still it wont go away. The surgeon said if insurance doesnt approve the brachioplasty, it would be right at $3500 for both arms.

Just FYI, usually the quote that the PS gives you is just HIS fee, it doesn't include anesthesia and OR fees. you should check. I hope your insurance pays for it.
