Unhappy Ins. Review Committee's cruel joke

Let me preface this by saying I work for the same HMO provider that handles my health care, so THANK GOD I know people. I don't know how many of you survive without someone to call and yell at or at least get an insurance perspective.

So I saw my PCP Thursday and we went over the shopping list of hoops I have had to jump/have yet to jump for the surgery. I am >45 and I have blood sugar issues, so they require a "cardiology clearance". My doc submitted for me a adenosine cardiolyte procedure. I am told it is a nuclear medicine study. On Saturday, the paperwork for the referral was in my mailbox. YIPPEE SKIPPY!

I called the place this morning, and she said, "What is your height and weight?" I said, "5'8", 308." She said, "Hang on while I talk to the tech."
She came back and said that my body habitus is too large for their camera.

I called someone in the Utilization Management Dept. (traditionally called the "Review Dept") that I knew knew me. I said, "What kind of cruel joke are you sending to your bariatric patients when you refer them to these yahoos??"

Maria apologized profusely, promised to revamp their policy with that particular provider, and told me to go to another place. Not only did that other place call ME...they arranged for my appointments (I guess big folk get to come in TWICE). Now I get to deal with my bosses.

I will have the cardio tests next week, and I am begging a co-worker to do my mammogram for me next week too...with those, I am DONE with my hoop jumping and will get my referral to the surgeon. Whew!

Love,

Judijo.

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

I had something similar happen to me, I was told that I was to big for the MIR scan in my area and had to be referred to one that could hold my weight ( at that time it was 326), it was so frustrating. I hope all goes well for you and you get your date soon.

Good luck with your tests, I just had my cardio tests this last week.

I will tell you that the trouble you're having with your HMO is the same reasons that I changed from HealthNet HMO (after nearly 20 years) to Blue Cross/Blue Shield PPO. I've had no problems, knock on wood, since I started with Blue Cross on the 6th of January.

good luck with the test, I'm sorry you had to undergo the stress of trying to schedule an apt. with a place that could not accomodate you, that is horrible. The new place sounds wonderful.

O.k. this may sound like a stupid question but what camera are you referring to when they say "your body habitus is too large" I haven't had to do any tests that involve using a camera except when I had my GI series.

Hi, Queenofthenile.
Actually, nuc med procedures is not totally unlike the xray setup of the GI series. There is a table the patient lies on that is, for most, not adjustable. The uptake camera, that gathers the radiation I will be spitting out from my heart, is apparently not as adjustable at place #2 than it is at place #1.
TCRHonline - Twin County Regional Healthcare - Diagnostic Imaging/Radiology Services is a link to the procedure and the camera in a facility in Virginia.
