Default Opinions Please!

Hi All!

I am a college student majoring in interior design. We are currently designing a bariatric chair which means that it will be built to support up to 750 lbs. The purpose of this project is to incorporate the problems and issues that obese people face when shopping for furniture or trying to find a place to sit in a doctor's office or other public places. I was wondering if you all could give me some advice as to what would make a chair more comfortable and make you feel more comfortable about sitting in it. Thanks so much for all the help! It will be greatly appreciated! And best of luck with the weight loss. I have confidence that everyone of you can succeed!

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

my surgeon's office has wider chairs in his office...apparently, there are companies out there already catering to this?!?!?

does not sit too low to the ground, definitely wider width, very sturdy looking, something that is too cushioned is harder for us to get out of. hope this helps.

Thanks so much! Info like that is just what I am interested in hearing. I know many health care facilities currently have chairs like these but we are trying to find a way to make them not as obvious that they are larger compared to the rest of the seating in the room yet still be very comfortable. Congrats on your 20 lb loss!

The recliner is a great suggestion! If you have any others let me know because the more feedback I can get the more insight I will have for my project. I appreciate everyone's help so much!

It must have arms because we need to push ourselves up to get out of the chair. But they have to be far apart so we can fit and not get wedged in.

I HATE medical office chairs that are fastened together at the arms, or God forbid, we have to SHARE arms with the person next to us. To accommodate a 750 lb. person, you would have to have it at LEAST twice as wide as a conventional chair. It has to be taller with sturdy arms.
Also , to accommodate that size person on a regular basis, consider a hydraulic lift chair that will stand the patient from a seated position and vice versa.

Use a micro-weave fabric. Do NOT try to use what we used to call Naugahyde, which is a vinyl fake leather. Skin is sensitive and sticks to leather wannabe products. Real leather is too cold. (Hey, you asked. LOL) Maybe removable/rewashable covers?

along the lines of the recliner - post op recliners at my hospital required you to push on the arms & push backwards in order to lift the leg part up... it was very difficult/painful to use those muscles after abdominal surgery. It was murder getting the leg thingy down when you wanted to sit up again. Maybe an electronic type leg lift/lowering device.
