I recently got my approval and my surgery date and I was very surprised today to find out that my surgeon doesn't require any kind of pre-op diet nor any type of...err...colon cleansing prior to RNY.

Is this a norm?

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Every Surgeon Is Different With Different Rules....
I Personaaly Would Try To Lose @ Least 5% Of My Body Weight Prior To Surgery Just Because The Little Weight Loss Decreases The Size Of Your Liver= Less Of A Chance For Complications...

I Needed To Loss 10% & No Bowel Cleansing Which Is Brand New Cause In The Beginning They Gave Me A Do & Don"t List & Bowel Cleansing Was Included...

Welcome Aboard To A Wonderful Group!!!

Congrats On Your Date & Approval:!!!!
It Will Be Here B4 You Know It...

Default Hello KnitterGirl!

HELLO! I know, you probably are thinking to yourself, "who in the heck is this guy?" lol I don't get in here these days, as much as I would like to. BUSY! BUSY! BUSY!, but I will give ya my two cents. lol As you will find out from other replies to your post, some have to lose a certain amount, some have a special diet before surgery, some have to cleanse their colons, etc. Every surgeon has a different protocol you will have to follow before surgery. I never had to do anything different right up until midnight before my surgery. Of course, then, I couldn't eat or drink. That was pretty good, I thought, since food at that time, was still a pretty good friend of mine. I am very happy for you though, in getting approval for surgery. CONGRATS! Your life is going to change massively after your surgery. Good Luck with everything. It is a journey with many many many rewards. mike

The 2 week liquid diet really helped me to prep for the 9 weeks of different eating until I made it to the solid food. I still will not touch any kind of soup based product...LOLOLOL

Its funny how surgeons kind of differ in what they expect from you pre-op. I had no specific pre-op diet, but did need to lose 10% of my excess weight to shrink the liver a bit. I did have to do a bowel cleanse the day before and only drink liquids that day, but it was relatively painless and I am happy I did it because I didn't want a bunch of food backed up in there anyway when they are gonna go in and do what they do..
However, if it is not required for everyone, chances are it is not that big of a deal, prob more an added precaution some docs prefer to take.
Good luck with everything and see you on the loser's bench!

My surgeon did not require any pre op diet or colon cleanse. The only one was the clear liquids the 24hrs before and then the nothing by mouth after midnight before surgery. Plus we started solids in the hospital the 2nd or 3rd day.. That's been so long ago it's kind of a blur anymore..lol

I didn't have a special diet...no 2 week liquid thing...and no colon cleansing. I had to stop eating by noon the day before...and cease liquids by midnite! Every surgeon is different!

Hey! I am nearing the end of my first week on the pre-op diet...I fell off the wagon yesterday though (self sabotage), but jumped right back on!!!
It is hard, and it does suck, and I would rather not be doing it to be truthful, simply because it is my birthday in a week and I want to go out and party!! lol, but I am not risking anything as my surgery is only 2 days after. *sigh*
But thats ok.... *sniff*
other than the pre-op diet, no bowel prep, just the ceasing of food and liquids by midnight etc as I am first on the surgery list!! woohoo!!!!
