I am meeting with a surgeon in a few weeks for the first time. I have a question. I had a rough childhood and as a teenager used to cut. I obviously have scars from that and am wondering and worried that a doc may discriminate against me because of that and say I do not qualify. Is this a reason to be disqualified for surgery? I am fine now but stilll shocks people.

How do I handle it if the doc asks or should I bring it up even if they do not?

I am really ready for this surgery understand the life changes needed to be made. Thanks for your time in responding!!

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

If You Are Recieving Therapy Now, And Have Gone Through Some Treatment Plans, I Would Think It Would Be Okay.. What The Psychologist Is Looking For Is That You Are Emotionally Ready For This Journey. If You Can Handle Stressors Without Referring Back To Food As A Source To Relieve Them..
Since This Is Very Emotional Rollercoaster( Literally!!!) It Is In Your Best Interest To Have Mental Stability In Place Prior To The Surgery.
I Hope I've Helped A Little..
Good Luck.
Lol,

Welcome to the board, thank you for joining us.

Be honest with your dr. Drs are trained not to be judgemental (well, I do know there are some who are, anyway, but), we are trained to give you the help you need.
Many insurance/surgeons will require psych assessment as one of the pre op exams. Please do not be upset, nor be afraid of it, and be your natrual self, be completely honest when going through the evaluation. This is to see if you are ready for the surgery, as the post op life is as much a mental trip as a physical one, but even if they do see some problems, and advice you to get help, that doesn't mean a complete denial, they only want you to be truly ready. So, past pysch history shouldn't be a reason for denial, if things are under control now (even if you are still taking medication, or in therapy, and there are plenty of members here who've gone through this-- in this case, they may ask for clearance from your psych dr or therapist) they will only ask you to keep up with the psych care. If you have been released from such care, but the psych eval finds that you could use some help, you may be asked to undergo some pre op therapy. Again, do not be discouraged by this, by following through with the request, your chances for approval get better, and there are plenty of people who've experienced this too. In the end, they have gotten their surgery, and regain their health.

(((((((((HUGS)))))))))) May your journey go well.

Hello...Like the doc said, many are required to go through a pyshc evaluation prior to the surgery. I would recommend being honest as the professionals you will meet throughout this journey are there to assist you. If you are not honest then you have placed some barriers there that may be difficult to overcome later.

My pysch told me, and I quote, "I am not interested in whether you talk to little green martians, but what do you say back to them when you talk to them." I thought that was pretty humorous.

You are going to be fine through this journey. Again, just be honest because you do not want to put self-imposed barriers in your way. Also, this entire process requires gut-level honesty.

you will have meeting with a shrink and they do all the testing to determine if you are all ready for this journey, if you have already dealt with these issues and they are in your past i wouldnt see a problem, good luck in your journey

Medical pros have heard/seen it all. What's the point in trying to hide something that they will just know when they look at you anyway? We dealt with cutting in my family and as hard as it was, the therapy and healing ~emotionally, more than physically~ was priceless. Remember, not having challenges in life isn't what counts, it's going thru them and coming out victorious!

As the others have said be honest first and you will have a pschych eval. too. This surg. is a positive improvement to your life and health and I would think your past would not factor in too too much.. Good luck and take care. Kathy
