You talk about you and tell them what your life has been like. They want to know what meds you take, your current home situation and support system. They'll guide the discussion and it's not bad.

I had to take a questionaire. It asked if I thinking or have I ever thought of killing myself or harming myself in any way, what I thought about myself....if I thought my life was useless or worthless, if I thought I wasn't valued by others, and basically how I felt about daily life including intimacy. Then the psych spoke with me for awhile and that was it.

They are looking into if you are stable enough to take on the mental roller coaster ride of thie journey. If you are diagnosed with depression, for instance, you may be adviced to get it under control, and your surgery can be postponed till the psych says you are stable enough. This does sometimes happen, but not often. If you do have some issues that can throw a curve in your post op journey, it's better to be aware of it, and to get the tools to get through pre op.
It's very very very rare that psych results will cancel your surgery completely, so just be your honest self, as it's in the best interest for you.
As for how the actual appt will go, it will depend on the psych, you may just have an interview, or you may have to take a standardized pysch eval test (there are many types) and an interview.
In any case, this is to make your post op journey smoother.

I was told in the three years my medical group has had a bariatric program, only 2 individuals "failed" their psych evals. One never had the surgery and the other was approved when her divorce and custody issues were resolved.
The medical group processes about 300 individuals/year for the bariatric program. I don't know how many actually have the surgery.

I didn't have to see a psych, but had to do a questionairre for Dr. Machado. It seemed to focus on your medical and weight loss history, whether or not you were a binge eater, and if you'd ever been depressed or suicidal.
