| Discouraging Words
So I'm a pharmacy technician, I see and talk to A LOT of different people every day. Tonight I was speaking to one of our male patients who recently had GBS a month or two ago at the same hospital I am using. This man is doing really well and so far no regrets. Also, he knows that I just started the process of WLS and he wishes me well. So the lady behind him must of heard our conversation, she comes up to me and proceeds to tell me that she "has been in healthcare for 14 years and how horrible it is to see people 5 years later after gaining all their weight back" then she gives me this look and goes on to tell me that you can have " a lot of health problems, and that is in YOUNG people too!!" It discouraged me and I don't want to be discouraged, I want a positive mindset because I NEED this surgery to get my life back. I don't want to be second guessing myself but I guess it's hard NOT to do it when you get such negative responses from people. I have a lot of support but it's really surprising how many people are waiting to see me FAIL.

(((((HUGS))))) There are people who revel in seeing others fail. With a lot of postive input, you'll do well, so hard as it is, you will have to learn to ignore the know-it-alls.

Collywobbles,
I could be wrong, but I believe the stats say that we'll regain around 10-20% of what we lost. So, if you lose 100 pounds you will regain about 20. If you lose 150 you'll regain about 30. Can you regain more? Yes. You can regain it all if you really work at it. That's why we all say that this is a lifestyle change, not a diet. The first year after surgery you will drop the weight, you don't have an option. But after that is when you have to really commit to maintaining the lifestyle. So use that first year to develop good habits.
There ARE downsides to this surgery, that's why we all tell you to research, research, research. THe people on here are mostly the success stories, but there are other web sites where you will hear the negative things. If you choose to do this, we will all be here to cheer you on and help you find the path, but do listen to the negative too. Ask these people specific questions - did this happen to you, or are you talking about the sister to the neighbor who is married to a third-cousin, etc? What exactly happened? Lots of times their "horror story" turns out to be non-compliance with taking their vitamins and supplements, or just that they miss not being able to eat what they used to, or that they DO eat what they used to and get sick from it. Well DUH, that's what the surgery is supposed to do.
Good luck. The decision is the hardest part.

the reality is that some do gain it back....and the ones who gain back probably should have NEVER had surgery to begin with.....it's a mind game, and unless you have the right mindset, COMPLETELY removing your stomach wouldn't help either. It's a TOTAL LIFE CHANGE...the ones who fail see it as a quick

I agree. It's a mindset. You know if you are willing to do what it takes to be successful. It's not a quick fix. You have to be willing to do your part. If you're willing to do that, you will be successful.

I honestly do feel like I'm ready to do WHATEVER it takes to make this happen for me. I do fully understand that it's up to me, myself and I to make this a total success. I guess it's just hard to hear "negative" things when you're trying so hard to do what you think is something positive. I honestly can't imagine going through surgery and everything it entails to just go back to the old me -- I don't think I could ever let that happen. At least I hope so. I asked my surgeon straight up " are the chances of complications from being 275 pounds higher than that of having the surgery" and she told me
"much greater" So I figure that yes, there is a possibility I could have this done and have some issues but I also figure I could have a heart attack before I'm 40 if I don't do something to change my life.
Thank you everyone, this is also such a great place to visit to help me clear my mind.

Hey don't get discouraged about what someone else says! My lung doc had worked in ER and saw all the "dumping". He did not discourage me though. You said what is most important, You want to do this to improve your health! Stick with that and put it all in God's hands. If you are to have it done, God will open all the doors and allow it to happen! Hang in there! We are all here to help you with these kind of issues! God Bless

I've been telling people that I've had the RNY surgery and the horror stories are coming in. (I'm very glad I didn't tell many people before the surgery!) I agree with what Not Quite Barbie said that most of the problems were from "non-compliance with taking their vitamins and supplement", and from non-compliance with the diet required after surgery. There were also the "she wasn't mentally prepared and couldn't deal with the changes required" stories.
So, if you're mentally prepared to change your life - which means changing the way you're eating forever, and dealing with the head hunger - and you're ready to follow ALL the rules for life after surgery, they you're ready no matter what anyone else says. If you really are prepared, then have faith in YOU!

In any weight loss program there are way too many people who want to see you fail and when you DO lose the weight, you lose a bunch of "friends". I guess they were not friends in the first place but it still hurts and you say "I don't understand - I'm the same person I was before I lost weight".
You are doing this for your health. You can use the negative remarks for research - some folks do regain, some folks do develop new health problems because the surgery is a trade-off - heck even losing weight without surgery is a trade-off. LIFE is a trade-off.
But that doesn't mean that YOU will regain. Because there are lots of folks who do NOT regain also!
You don't need other people for this - you only need YOURSELF. And the knowledge that however you lose the weight (and keep it off), it's mostly dependent on you. And even if you do LOSE friends when you lose the weight (I sure did! ), it's still going to feel good to lose the weight! And even if you experience some of the "trade-offs" if you are like most folks, you will still think it's worth it.
Believe in yourself. You are a courageous person for taking this step to help your health and you will DO IT!
