Default just starting out with lots of questions

Hi I have an appointment for Feb 17 with the surg DR. I know I will have to do the 6 month of diet trials etc, but I wanted to know if any one knows what they usually put you on? I would love to start now. I want to be as healthy as I can.

I also wanted to know how often they have you come in during the 6 month deal ?

will I know what the way of eating will be like for after the surgery before I have it. I know kind of the just now, but do they keep it form you untill the end?

Once you do the 6 month deal does it take long for the ins Co to say ok?

What if loose weight on the 6 month time, will they still help me. ( ins co & the WLS office)

ok another question.... What did people tell there children? I have a 2,4,7,& almopst 10 year old. We use terms like healthy weight in our house but I dont know what to say about WLS to them. Part of me says why tell them but I dont know... What did some of you do?

What if I dont loose on the diet they put me on, will they still help me?

I had some one ask me why I dont just eat the way they tell you to and skip the surgery. I told them that doesnt work, you would go into starvation. Is that correct?

Any advice would be great
Thanks

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

Kate: I don't know what diets the doctor will put you on. I did not have to go through that -- I was able to prove that I had been on every diet known to mankind before going in and that I had been morbidly obese for more than ten years. So I was able to skip a lot of the prelims but if they make you do it -- just do it -- and if you are able to lose more weight through those methods more power to you. As long as you are still more than 100 lbs over the recommended weight for your height you would still qualify for WLS. As for telling your kids, I would say the little ones really won't understand but you can share something with the 7 & 10 year old, they can help you a lot and kids love to help. Just think how much more fun you'll be able to have with them running around! Good luck to you. Hang in there -- remember this is for the rest of your life and it is worth everything you have to go through to get there!

Hello and welcome. this is a great site for info and support. I had to do the six month Dr. suppervised diet. It can be any diet your dr. suggest. Mine was just 1500 cal. a day diet. They use the wt you start there with as your bmi wt. If you have co-morbity health problems you probably wont have a problem getting the help you need. It has been a life changing experience for me. I would do it again in a flash.. I only told a few people that i was having the surgery. It your choice to tell or not to tell. I am sure you will make a wish descion. I wish you the best of luck. There are alot of things to be done that you can work on while you do the 6 mt. thing. It takes a while but it is so worth it. Let us hear from you. dixie

I had to do the 6 month doctor supervised diet also. I had to go to a doctor that they selected, whom I loved. I went once a month and was weighed and measured (neck, waist...). They doc asked how the month went and so forth. I also had to prove that I was on many weight loss programs during the years. I lost 43 lbs pre-op. I basically counted my calories and drank a meal replacement drink for lunch that I got from the doctor. Once my 6 months was done she sent all notes to my surgeon and he sent everything to my insurance co. I only took about 10-12 days to get pre-approved. Then bam - surgery was scheduled. You could start on a multi vitamin for now.

You can learn alot from old posts here. Your surgeon will be able to answer all of your questions also. They should not try to hide anything from you. If not we are here to tell you what you need.

P.S. I too had people say well now that you are doing so good on this diet why don't you just keep doing this and forget the surgery? Hummm.....NO that was the only way I was able to stay focused because I had a new goal, A NEW LIFE, no more medications and I sleep all night long.

Good luck on your journey.

thanks ladies

How did you prove your past diet attempts. I have been a daily logger in a low carb forum for a couple of years that shows I have been trying but its not under a DR care. I also did 2 months of nutrisystem foods and was a memer of curves but only attended 3 times. I have also read every diet book out there and spoke with my prior DR for a few months of tracking a few years ago. This is not enough to get me around the 6 month deal though, is it? I dont mind waiting except that I home school my children and I would rather have this done in june and have the summer to recover. We use a master school, virtual school and I couldnt just stop school for a month. I guess if this is what I want to do then I will find my way. I am a strong person who usually lands on my feet.

I have also been reading alot and I see that people gain back 10 -15 % of their weight. What if I stick with the plan and exercise, is it a done deal that we will gain some back? I am determened to obtain a healthy life.

Anything you can get your hands on......print up and make copies of old receipts, doctor notes, retuned checks for classes (attended or not)....start gathering now. Not all surgeons or insurance companies recommend you do the 6 months pre-op. Mine did because it is a way to prove you are sersious about this.

As for the 10-15 % weight gain...I am just coming to my 1st year surgiversary so I am not on maintanence yet. We do have several long timers on here. Your body usually is the one that says it is done losing and needs to gain a little. But after you lose your weight you are going to love working out and running around with your kids so much that you are not going to want to gain the weight back.

Kim I thought about creating a file of posts that I have put on a low carb forum.. Do you think that is worth anything? It is all dated and they could go back and verify them.... The curves and nutrisystem was 2 years ago, sooo..... I have also had the new family DR request my files from the old DR office that will show atleast 1 attempt at weight loss and definitaly shows weight for 5 years. I am not trying to skip the 6 month deal ( unless I can, lol) I just dont want them to shoot me down. my over all health is good still.

Yes, yes that is what they are looking for. Start collecting and gathering. Signing your release forms so your PCP can get you copies. All wonderful stuff. How about how long you've been on medications and why??
