| Walkbyfaith Update!!! I scheduled my Gastric Bypass Surgery today. It is going to be on October 23 at 8:00 am, I do my Preadmission on Monday, October 9 at 9:00 am. The Doctor said that was going to have bloodwork and Upper GI done. I just can't wait until the Surgery is over. What is a Upper GI and what is done? |

Depends on what your dr meant by the upper GI. Is it going to be endoscopy or barium-Xray study?
If it is endoscopy, then the gastroentrologist will check your esophagus, stomach, and the bulbus (first portion of the duodenum, which is the first portion of your small intestines) visually using a gastroendoscope, for varices (swollen veins due to liver cirrhosis),GERD (gastric reflux), herniation of the stomach, stomach cancers, ulcers, polyps, erosion of the surface which can lead to ulcers, and also maybe for Helicobacter Pylori which is a bacteria that causes repetitive ulcer, in which case, the bacteria will have to be dealt with before surgery.
If it is barium-Xray study, with the double contrast method, the flow of the barium and any deformation of the stomach and blubus, usually due to ulcers, will be checked, as well as obvious varices, hernias, ulcers and polyps, as the smaller ones are often less easy to check with Xrays compared to scopes. Also, GERD cannot be diagnosed with Xrays, only with the scope. With the barium study, the silouhette of the entire stomach and bulbus can be seen on the screen and film, and the flow of barium can be seen through the lower portion of the duodenum and further down as well (although anything beyond the duodenum does not have any diagnostic meaning with a few exceptions) compared to the scope where only to the bulbus can be seen.
The barium-Xray exam is what is used for the leak study post op, though gastrographin may be used instead of barium on occasions.
Each method of examination has its advantages and disadvantages, so which method is chosen will depend on the info the dr needs.
