OK so ... one of my very good friends had lap band a year before I had the RNY. I have by passed her in weight loss. She cant seem to kick the food addiction. She will be full, go throw up and come back for more. She can eat bags of chips and does...they are so mushy they just go right on through. RNY leaves you unable to eat the wrong foods... trust us on that one. Most of us cant even look at a plate with french fries on it. Lap band... is 40% success. 40. Thats not good enuff odds for me. I had absolutley n o problem with my surgery or recovery.

Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

banding is restriction....RNY is malabsorption PLUS restriction....I'm not sure how long it took you to lose from 450 to 300....you should see the weight fall off quickly if you have a revision....

Keep in mind, you WILL have to change your dietary rules....FOR LIFE. Nothing high in sugar or fat....toast any bread you eat....PROTEIN first, veggies 2nd, carbs if there's room....as Perfesser said, your pouch will FORCE compliance...(the consequences are NOT pretty).....the RNY rules are quite different than those with banding....

my step sister had banding...she lost like 57 pounds...she threw up CONSTANTLY...they finally had to go in and let all the fluid/air (whatever they fill it with) out...it's basically sitting in there doing nothing...she's gained most of her weight back...but even when it was working, she drank tons of beer and ate stuff I won't even touch anymore....it's kinda sad...I passed up her weight loss in the first 90 days after my RNY...my father isn't even allowed to talk about my weight loss because it hurts her feelings....?!?!?!?

Hello and welcome to the board!
I had RNY on January 20th of this year, and I am with this procedure. I have several friends at work who went with the band instead, and they have all had problems with it over time and are switching to the RNY. One of them even had a technique for bypassing the band, which is more difficult with the RNY. I agree with Perfessor that the restrictive quality of the RNY is a great supplement to will power and motivation. I also didn't want an extra appliance in my gut that I would have to deal with consistently with fillings and concerns of slippage.

I wish you will with your decision, and please let us know how you are doing.

Many Blessings,
Maggie

There are more band-to-bypass patients in the obesityhelp.com forums. They are not the nicest crowd out there (the posts are not as filtered as they are here) but there is some worthwhile information there as well.

You answered why I chose gastric bypass over banding. 1) I didn't want to go back for fills/empties forever, and 2) I am not trusting of any artificial anything in my body. Hub's body rejected an artificial toe joint, and he almost lost his entire 1st toe!

I am very satisfied with my "permanant" surgery. (yes, the banding is designed to be permanent, but many go in thinking it is easily reversed)

OMG that reminds me of the other day when my coworker offered me some of the sweet potato fries...I took one look and almost hurled into the bag! the smell of the grease nearly made me lose my lunch. LOL
