Default Insurance - How long does it take?

In what part of the process does your insurance company find out and work with your surgeon to see if you are approved? I know my insurance does cover weight loss surgeries, just don't know if they will cover me. When do they start working with the Dr to get approved?

Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

I have Medcost insurance and once all my evaluations, testings, consultations, labs, etc were completed the surgeon's office submitted it all. I was approved in 4 days. I was told to expect at least two weeks. My surgery is scheduled for Jan 20. Good luck!!!

I worked with the lady at our surgeon's office and let her run that show. But two days after she submitted, I had approval and we set a date. BCBS is our carrier. Worked the same for Peanut when she did hers, too. Two days and set a date!

But I worked very closely with her to make sure I was on track and had everything taken care of.

Your mileage may vary!!

HI CRH,

I'm not sure if this helps but after I finished all my necessary tests (IE: Psych Eval & Blood work) they submitted it to my insurance and was approved in 24-48 hours. I was surprised I was approved so quickly as I barely meet the requirements for surgery but I have co-morbid problems. Every INS company is different but these days it seems they give you less of a problem if the doctor qualifies you. I have BCBS of PA.

It depends on the company AND the plan they arrange. I have UHC which normally approves right away. However, my employer, the state of Ohio has a plan that mandates six months supervised physician diet before they approve surgery. I have supplied all required weight records, the only thing I have left now is two more visits with the dietitian which will be Feb 8 and Mar 8, then we go for final approval.

I have Cigna. My WLS center told me this is how it works...see a PA for 6mths, attend 2 support grps, 6 wks lifestyle change classes, blood work, EKG, phych eval,
ultrasound then....appt w/surgeon. All my p/w will be sent to the insurance co by the
surgeon and should know in 2-4 wks. Alot of hoops to jump through, but well worth it!!! Good luck w/your journey!!!
