Alt Weight Loss Surgery Insurance
Yes, you can often get insurance cover for your Weight Loss Surgery.
Our own Craig "Big-T" Thompson has been there and done that, and he's written an e-book about it.

((((((HUGS)))))

Are you being treated for diabetes already? Stress can increase your blood sugar level up, too, but only up to bordeline level with non-diabetics, so, if you have a level high enough to affect your surgery, then you must have had undetected diabetes for a while, now. All the more reason you need this surgery, but yes, your surgery will be postponed until the level drops to where the surgeon will feel safe enough for surgery.

The easiest way to lower your blood sugar on vacation is, um, well, not to eat--there is no other way, but that is not realistic, so here's my suggestion.
Avoid alcohol, avoid all sweet drinks, soda pops, even coffee and stuff loaded with sugar.
Avoid all sweets, keep your carbs and fat low, and try to get protein in first, just like the post ops.
If you are taking medication for diabetes, ask your PCP if your dosage can be increased.

Now, having said all that, the best bet to lower your sugar level pre-op is to go on insulin--temporalily, since, as you lose weight, your sugar levels should come down, and you probably won't need insulin any more, though, it may turn out you need the minimum amount of oral medication.

Sorry this had to happen to you, but it is better to be safe than sorry, you do need to control everything that can be controlled for a safe and uneventful surgery. If you have any Qs, post them here, or you can PM me, whichever.

Thank you Lisa & Doc for your responses. I have been a diabetic for 10+ years. I am on oral meds and insulin, although I have not been 100% compliant. Sorry Doc, I am 'one of those'. I am going to be oh so good while on vacation and we are going to walk, walk, walk AND I will take all my meds as prescribed and write everything down. My doctor wants me to call her on Thursday and give her my readings and then I will see how she will adjust my meds. I am just so afraid they will cx my surgery. I have waited so long for this experience that I don't want to wait any longer and certainly not have it postponed. I am definately going to have to re=think the diet choices on vacation. Alcohol, coffee, soda are not problems. fried cheicken, BBQ ribs and catfish...now that may be an issue. I leave Monday morning. Wish me luck! And again, thanks for letting me vent. (wonder if venting burns calories?)

Donna I feel your pain! I am having blood sugar issues too. My A1C went from 7.2 to 7.3 the next month. The following month 7.5. I had been following the diabetic diet given to me at the surgery center. The carbs are high for me and I have a hard time staying in control. I am being sent to the Diabetic Care Center next week and to an Endocrinologist. They tell me at the center that this Dr. has always been able to get blood sugars down for surgery. My only beef is how long will it take? I was at first told end of February, and now I am looking at the end of April.

And the most frustrating part is knowing that after the surgery our levels will plummet and we will be off the meds. But they told me that a higher level of blood sugars puts me at a greater surgery risk, and I would not heal as well. So it is for our own good, but it is so damn frustrating!
