Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | I saw my family Dr yesturday...He strongly advised me to get back on a diet before I see the surgeon in June. Ive been off work because of a disabity and I guess I gained a little more wieght being not active. I was confused because of the fact Im going for WLS .(lol) But then the rotten son of a so and so said he was worried...I had to get in the best shape possible to make it through the surgery. I naturally said...parden me . Then he said that WLS was a big time operation , also he said I had some life threatening things wrong with me...ie...High Blood Pressure , Diabetes... High Calesteral...and more, needless to say these things arent going to do me any favors when I get the operation. So...now Im back on my diet of salads and soups .No sugars or salts. I guess I should feel pretty fortunate...after the operation I wount even have that. Sorry guys I just needed a shoulder to rip off...I mean cry on...lol Thanks

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | ((((HUG))))) jerry!!! I know its frustrating but eating a healthy as you can pre op can reduce complications and make it a more safer surgery for you. As much as we dont want to hear it your doctor is looking out for your best interests. MY surgeon actually requires a 10 percent weight loss pre op ......because he strongly believes it reduces complications. I know many say well if we were able to loose weight we wouldnt need the surgery...but i also feel this prevented me in the 3 months i was getting all my pre surgery clearances from not gaining another 20 lbs...which in a last supper syndrome i could have easily done! SO being post op i was happy that my healthy habits began early. As far as the high blood pressure, Diabetes, High Cholestrol and more many of us experience pre op. JUST helps us get the insurance approvals becuase of the deteriating health from being obesite. RELAX and do the best you can!!!!! ITS not easy i know that but i know for me i got the preop pounds off and was glad i did !!!!!!! AND please dont apologize your post is waht this board is for!!!!! TO be able to come and vent and turn to people who truly understand. AND we DOoooooooooooooooo! do the best you can from now till june.....

| Super Moderator | I know it's hard to understand your dr telling you that you need to go on a diet for the surgery when you are looking into the surgery because you can't seem to lose your weight any other way. You see, with any elective surgery, and WLS is an elective surgery, the better your overall health is, the less chance you have for developing post op complications, and the quicker and easier your recovery is. Also, weight is one of the issues that can cause complications, and make the surgery itself difficult, so the surgeons do want you to lose as much weight as you can pre-op, and even a 5lb, 10lb loss can make a big difference. It isn't as if they are asking you to get all your excess weight off, they are asking you to lose only the minimal amount needed to make the surgery a bit safer for you. Another bonus with following your dr and dietician's instructions and your diet is that you can start early on setting up eating patterns that you will have to commit to, post op. You may think, "I don't need to do this until after I've had the surgery", but believe you me, it is much easier to know and experience what kind of diet you need to follow before you actually have your surgery, so post-op, you won't be unprepared and confused. By following the your drs instructions, you will also be showing your drs and surgeons that you are committed to going through with the surgery and with the lifestyle changes that is required to make this surgery a success--you see, you CAN cheat on the surgery and gain your weight back if you are not careful, and use the TOOL you will be given wisely. The more and the earlier you learn what you will need to do in the future, the better you will be able to deal with post-op life. Since you say that you have diabetes as one of the co-morbidities of your weight, I will have to warn you that you may find your surgeon will require you to bring down your blood sugar level, and the level of something called HbA1C--usually called A1C--down to a certain level to assure a better success rate for the surgery, and for that, you may even find having to go on some medication for the time being. You may not like what your dr said, but it sounds like your dr understands what this surgery is about, and knows what the patients need to do in preparing for the surgery, and cares very much about you and your health, happiness and life. Please keep in mind, we drs say things you don't want to hear only because we want the best for you, and want you to have a better chance for a better life. It's only when we don't care about the patient (as if it ever happens, though) is when we won't say anything except what the patient wants to hear, and allows the patient to spin out of control. We're all very passionate about our work, and nothing makes us more happy than seeing our patients happy and healthy, and not needing a dr in their lives anymore. ((((((HUGS)))))

| Super Moderator | Oh, yes, one more thing. You can eat what you want post op, you know, just only it should be in good balance and moderation. Not the AMOUNT you used to, and certain foods maybe not because of dumping issues if ever you get them, but the further out you get, the more "normal" foods you wil be able to eat, and you may be surprised how much, as a matter of fact, so many kinds and in amounts that will get you scared that you'll gain your weight back. So, it's not like you are never going to be able to eat anything unless you eat it now. No need to go into the "Last Supper Syndrome."

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Hi ya Jerry. I like your Pic you have posted. My hubby is yet to get mine on the comp so I can attach. Probally best for eveyones eyes if he takes his time. LOL Anyways.......You hang in there. I had knee surgery a couple years ago and im limited to the stuff I can do now. In the 2 years I have put on 50 lbs myself. We view family Drs as evil little things dont we. But now a surgeon we love ! Should be the opposite but its not. I noticed your from Canada. Are you on a list to have this done? I know your healthcare system is much different than ours and you almost play a waiting game. When your number comes up then your done. Do I have that part correct or do you need to correct me on it. Any ways Jerry its nice to have you around in here. Take care |

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | Hi MsVickie I guess you can say theres a waiting list, but pending on the surgery some waiting lists are longer. Ive have an appointment in June to see the sergion for the 1st time. Ive been waiting since January! Theres only 1 WLSergeon in my city. Apparently according to my family doctor,I was lucky, I could of been waiting another year ...just to see him for the 1st time ! Its a number of things ...Qualified Sergions...and the Ontario Govmnt doesnt really have Gastric Bypass Sergury on there Priority list. My health ins is paid for by the Ont Govmnt.

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | HI Jerry..... It is frustrating when the doc tells us this pre op because we think to ourselves if we could do this we wouldnt need the surgery! However it is in our best interest to be "as healthy as we can" that means just do your best to limit the foods that are not healthy and try your best to eat healthier pre op. Yes its true post op eventually we can eat most regular foods the best way to approach the surgery is that foods such as cakes and cookies and sugar and soda are a no no. If you dont know if you dump on them or not your better off. I find the ones who test the waters and find out that they dont dump on these foods tend to eat them more. People such as myself who try to avoid them at all costs dont know if we dump on them or not. However we are human and we may try something here or there {like the damn hazelnut coffee drink that got me last night} but in general we are better trained after surgery to our limits. The pre op diet trains our minds and helps. It also helps the surgeons because the high protein diet along with vitamins helps to avoid a fatty liver and make for an easier operating field for the surgeon. ANd remember the healthier we go in to surgery the easier recovery will be on your body. Never hurts to start taking the vitamins and increasing the protein. Protein also aid in healing.... Hang in there. Your time will be here before you know it and you are going to do great. LittleLisaMarie ![]() |
