before I am 60 (3 1/2 yrs) Goal Date:
Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | I am 6 days till surgery, 2 days until my 'clear liquids' begin and getting very excited. HOWEVER, my blood sugars are way out of control. 274,349, 192..etc. My PCP says it will make healing a lot harder for me with uncontrolled sugars. Has anyone experienced this? What does she mean by healing will be harder? I am a bit worried now and I need some reassurance about this whole thing. They have increased my insulin and I am tyring to eat sensibly but that is a moot point at this stage of the game. Is there anything I can eat to help in 6 days? Shall I walk from Colorado to California to get something going? I have only a month to recover before returning to work and now I am worried. Any input would be much appreciated. Thank you! |

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | ((((((((((((((HUGE COMFY HUGG)))))))))))))))) Donna, Well forst of all I cannot speak from your shoe because I'm not a diabetic, but my husband is type 2, well. I know that diabetic should take extra care about their wounds and toes for example because the healing process may take longer than the normal people, and the doctors are afraid that if (God forbid) the wound may get infected and develop to Gargrin. I saw a lot of documentary movie where they amputate the patients toe because it was not taken care of. So I would highly recommend that you precisely follow your PCP's instructions. Go on a lo-carb diet before your clear fluid diet, it will level the sugar in your system and increase the ketosis in your body (indicator that shows how much your body is burning fat instead of sugar). Walk around the yard, be reasonable about what you eat. I guess this is what I'll do if I were you. I know a lot of diabetic patients who did the WLS and no longer have sugar medications now at all. Happy losing. Love hanadi

| Super Moderator | First off, ((((((HUGS))))))) Donna. For diabetics, it is necessary to have their blood sugars below levels recommended by ADA (American Diabetes Association) before surgery. The reason is, you are more prone to infections especially with high blood sugar, as well as other complications. Blood sugar levels above 220mg/dl are known to have higher infection rates. Patients with fasting blood glucose below 126mg/dl and random blood glucose levels below 200 have better outcomes for surgery and other medical conditions. Although it is not indicated in the ADA criteria specifically, clinically, it is also preferable that your A1C level below 7.0% as well, but not always mandatory. As for your diet and therapy. First off, I must warn you, follow the dietary recommendations from your dr (preferably an endocrinologist or a PCP who has had specific training in treating diabetics) and your nutritionist/dietician who know you are a diabetic and you are preparing for surgey, and no one else's. It is very dangerous to follow diets non-professionals recommend, as they do now know your precise condition, and the requirements set by your surgeons and other drs. They themselves may be diabetics, and on diets instructed by their attending physicians and nut/dieticians upon instructions from the drs, but these diets are conditioned for that particular individual, and DOES NOT APPLY TO YOU. The basic requirements may be the same, put the specifics can be different, as we (I am a diabetologist, so, I can vouch for this) will often modify, according to the particular needs of the patient, whether medical or social. Ketosis, in particular, is very very dangerous for diabetics!! It is an indication that your metabolism is not working the way it should, and your acid balance will be disrupted. Severe ketosis will cause ketotic coma, which is life threatening. As a matter of fact, if ketone bodies are detected in your urine sample, you probably will have to be checked further to insure that you are not ketotic, or surgery, any surgery will be dangerous for you and will be postponed until the condition is remedied. The best way is for you to ask your PCP to be referred to an endocrinologist, and go on some form of medication, either oral, or insulin, or some of the newer meds like Byetta, which a number of pre-ops here are on, to control their sugar level for surgery. Most likely, you will not need these medications once you are post op and have started losing weight, so even if you may not like the idea of going on medication nor self injections, it is going to be for only a short time, to insure that your surgery will go well, so my opinion is, it is well worth the trouble. To summarizse. You must stay on a good and blanced diet, get in the exercise you can, and what sugar level that does not come down into the safe range, bring it down with the help of a specialist and some medication. (((((HUGS))))) Keeping you in my prayers and thoughts.

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | thank you so much Lisa,Hanadi and Doc for your help. Doc, I am following my PCP's advice, just didn't quite understand the part where it would take longer to heal. I wasn't quite sure what that exactly meant. I have had my insulin(s) increased for both am and pm and am being oh so careful as to follow my PCP (who also specializes in DM care) to the letter. Just getting nervous now and a bit antzy. Wish me luck! Thank you both for being here for me. I just love this site...it's all warm and fuzzy, if ya know what I mean. Love you guys!!! |

Weight Loss Method Roux en Y Gastric Bypass | good luck with the surgery on the 27th donna - I'm sure you will be fine. With regards to the antzy bit - I can relate to that oh so much at the moment. My favourite saying is 'from happy to snappy' - cos that totally describes how I am right now. My surgery is on the 26th so I will be thinking of you.
